The charity dinner we went to the other week had a live auction as its finale. One of the items up for bid was a “walk on” part to a TV show. Has anyone ever done one of these? What are they like? Do you get to see your self on TV, or do you generally end up on the cutting room floor?
I think in most cases it’s like being a featured extra. You probably don’t have any lines, but you might be sitting on a bench reading a paper or standing in line behind characters with lines. I know a guy who sat at the bar a few times on Cheers and was on Star Trek (Next Generation, I think) a couple of times but never had lines.
Sitting at the bar at Cheers would have been worth a nice charitable donation, I think. “NORM!!”
It would have been “wicked pissah”. I could have done it with a Boston accent: “Nahm!”.
Yeah, except you wouldn’t have any lines. If it makes you feel better, you could think with a Boston accent though.
In Hollywood, isn’t there a union of professional extras? I’m surprised they don’t kick up a fuss about extra roles being auctioned off for charity if it means one of their members doesn’t get hired.
Here’s an interesting account from a guy who won a walk-on on Scrubs:
I’m sure many extras that are not in the union.
I’ve never done a ‘walk on’, but when I was in high school our band did a ‘march on’ to a local telethon. Does that count?
I walked out* of “Teen Wolf” does that count?
*Much as I wish I could, I can’t claim that I just didn’t like the film. The truth is, I had appendicitis and was in a huge amount of pain. We went home, and shortly thereafter, to the hospital.
