Well, I’ll make a ranty comment anyway, because the forecast has changed. There currently are no fewer than four simultaneous weather warnings. The predicted rain is now “freezing rain or ice pellets”, the 60% chance of snow flurries tomorrow is now a certainty, and as an added bonus, there will be high winds. I forget what the fourth warning is but I don’t even care any more. Ima curling up in a ball and staying home as long as the rum holds out, but heaven forfend that I should venture out to the liquor store on New Year’s Eve! ![]()
My (full) recycle bin is still in the house as I’d rather have a full one tonight than none because its gone walkabout blown down the road somewhere
We may get gusts up to 80 km/h (50 mph) this afternoon, along with blowing snow.
I hate shopping for and comparing insurance. I have successfully avoided having to do it for quite a few years because I only had auto insurance and felt the rate was fair.
Now I’m having to shop for homeowners insurance and holy hell was my current company’s quote fucking ridiculously high. So now I’m spending my day calling insurance companies to get quotes and my head is just spinning - why can’t they just quote the same damn coverage?! Why is this so difficult?!
Freezing rain all day has resulted in several inches of slush. Which will be followed by 60 mph gusts today and tomorrow and highs in the 20s all week.
Best Buy can suck it. They were supposed to deliver my TV today between 11am and 3pm. It’s 4pm and we haven’t received so much as a phone call, a message, an update, nada. If you go to the provided link there’s a number to call for “personalized service,” so my husband called it and got an automated message to refer back to the link. The link that gives the phone number, which gives the link.
We’ve had some spotty weather today, I’m sure it’s put some people behind, but JFC, just give us a revised ETA. I’ve been waiting all day for this thing.
Freezing rain, snow squalls, and high winds – we’ve got it all!
It’s supposed to let up a little by tomorrow, which I sincerely hope since I do have to go out for food & booze before New Yw
You sure you don’t have enough booze already? This post suggests you do.
(I’m just teasing; I have typos I miss all the time, especially posting from my phone.)
I’m not sure how that happened. I tend to make typos frequently and then correct them. In this case it looks like I mistyped “w” instead of “e”, then got distracted by something and thought the post was complete and hit “Reply”. It wasn’t due to alcohol – honest! ![]()
Do you swear on Great Caesar’s Ghost? ![]()
My homeowner’s insurance was up for renewal last June. When I got the notice of the new rate it was double the previous rate. I called to ask why the increase was so high, and got told that the state insurance laws had changed and rates were increased across the board. So I started searching online and found another company which would give me a better rate (although still higher than I had been paying).
Oh, and I also just paid my property taxes, which were a lot higher than last year’s due to a reassessment.
Can you find an insurance broker who represents many companies? They’ll do the comparisons for you. It doesn’t cost you anything for the service.
I would much rather have continuous Christmas music on December 28th than on November 1st. Even Sirius XM has dropped almost all of their holiday channels, and the ones that are left are streaming only.
And deepest sympathy to LurkMeister for the loss of your sweet kitty.
For S&G, yesterday evening I went to both of the local stations that went 24x7 Xmas music to see if they were still playing it. One of them was still in the ‘holiday spirit’. That station used to be one of my main presets; however, the first year they changed I replaced them as soon as I realized that they made a December format change. It wasn’t until the following June that I even thought to tune them in again & since I liked the other station well enough that took over their preset I never added them back. I’m sure they run calculations that show them making more money from the format change but I wonder how accurate the predictions are on the loss side as they didn’t just lose me for a month but permanently.
I may need to reevaluate then - I was under the impression that brokers did charge the consumer for their services, so I have never used one!
As I mentioned before, what I worry about with “shopping” for the lowest-priced insurance, whether you do it yourself or have a broker do it for you, is that by definition you end up with the lowest-priced insurance. Have you or the broker evaluated the new insurer’s reliability, their conditions of coverage, the fairness of their claims adjudication? Personally, unless I’m clearly being ripped off, I’ve always preferred to stay with the same insurer that I know is dependable.
I ventured out today to do pre-New-Year shopping because (a) it was nice and sunny out, and (b) I had no choice if I wanted to avoid New Years Eve madness in the stores.
The nice and sunny weather was a distinct contrast to the high winds and blowing snow of the previous day, so I expected no problems with the weather. OMG! Even though it wasn’t especially cold (-7C according to the car thermometer which I have now learned to read now that I’ve figured out where it is!) the winds were still so strong that the wind blast was chilling even in my best winter coat, which I had to quickly zip up just to get from the supermarket parking lot into the store.
I shudder to think what it would have been like if I had gone out yesterday in the howling winds and blowing snow. The weather this winter is brutal. Thank you, La Nina, and I hope you never return! I’m sure Snowplow Guy feels the same way. Looks like he’ll be plowing instead of celebrating on New Years Eve, judging by the forecast for yet more snow.
Oh, well, at least a tiny anti-rant. The supermarket had Maroc (Moroccan) clementines back in stock, so I once again picked up a case. They are SO much better than the mandarin oranges I got last time as a substitute. Easier to peel, and so much tastier and juicier than the mandarins.
I agree wolfpup - cheapest isn’t necessarily what I’m looking for, but rather a good balance between coverage and price. And the fact that my highest quote ($6k!! per year) also had by far the worst coverage leads me to continue searching…
I need to tread softly here, because I have had a warning about certain criticism I have for the board software, Discourse.
But fucking shit man don’t fucking place the “loading” spinner top left and not even really top left; it is 15 pixels below top left.
Use any of a number of CSS tricks to centre the fucking thing.
Android.
More than just that, you can always lower your costs by getting less, which will come back to bite you if you end up needing it. Get state minimum coverage, no comp, no towing, no rental car & you’re going to be spending a lot more than you saved monthly with the lesser coverage if you end up using it
Insurance is tough mentally - spend money on something you don’t want to use; spend waste even more to be better off if something does go bad.
