Twix broke the rules. The rules as a mod she is entrusted to uphold. If you or I would have made that post we would more than likely recieved a warning.
It was pointed out in the forum that was created for discussing mod actions. She admitted she was wrong. Tell me again how this is a “witch-hunt”.
I don’t wish to run afoul of Marley, but you asked a question so I will try to respond. I don’t participate on a lot of other boards, either, but I am aware that the standards of some places include banning you for disagreeing with the board owner. So it really doesn’t matter what other boards do, what matters is that the SDMB tries to present itself as a polite board with evenhanded moderation. That’s why we have a 36 page list of rules, so people can fine parse what “don’t be a jerk” means.
Perhaps other boards don’t publically discipline their moderators, but do you know if they also let moderators repeatedly make rules violations of their own without doing something about it, like firing the moderator?
But Marley, is she allowed to continually violate the board rules without some form of sanction? There are plenty of instances where regular posters have violated a rule, realized it and apologized, and still received a sanction from a moderator. Why should a moderator get a pass on rules violations that a regular poster gets sanctioned for?
No, that is not what they said at all. They said, in effect, “I don’t care if you are going to have to be separated from your wife for a while in a long distance relationship because you said something critical about Obama.” They totally understood it was not a divorce, but merely long distance. Or at least you can’t tell that they didn’t understand by what was said, because all they said was “your situation”, not “your divorce”. Situation is a mucky vague enough term to include “long distance relationship because of a job”. It isn’t them that failed reading comprehension.
You know those fancy gold plated coffee mugs the mods get? The rim is lined with Conestoga Wagons. And if you look carefully each plate on the wagon has a mods name on it.
Sometimes posters get warned in those situations and other times they don’t. As always, that’s a judgment call.
I always find the ‘this mod should be warned’ thing confusing: even if we warned each other, what does anyone think it would accomplish? We have to make sure we follow the rules because that’s what posters expect of us and that’s what the job requires, not because we’re going to get warned or banned for stepping over the line while moderating. People are right to demand accountability and fairness, and transparency is important. But you’re not going to see the mods slap each other around in public. That would be a bad idea that would make it harder for us to work with each other and harder for us to do a good job moderating this board, which on the whole I think we do. Posters can always criticize, argue with us, and ask us to change our minds in public and tell you what you think of our performance, but staff issues are handled in private and you can expect that to remain the case.
Are you not satisfied with answers that are phrased as questions? Why do you suppose that is? Do you find it annoying?
Perhaps you could do your own research if you have a question, rather than asking a stream of semi-retarded questions* in every ATMB thread? The internet is -> that way. Perhaps you could do your OWN research about what “other boards” do and get back to us?
*Note, the “semi-retarded” refers to his questions not him. I’m attacking the post, not the poster, for the overly pedantic amongst us.
Wow, this is the first time I’ve seen a moderator admit that he/she did something inappropriate…revolutionary.
Anyways twickster, I honestly would have thought that a simple moderator note to you would have been fine, for you insulting those people in your moderator note, but after I saw you giving a warning to mhendo, I was utterly surprised. I have never seen anyone give a warning (well I haven’t been here long enough, but even I know that those kinds of posts would have been subject the moderator notes, not a warning) for a little insulting in MPSIMS. Therefore, since he had been there “long eonough” for you to give him a warning, you’ve also been here “long enough” and you’re a moderator! You should have known even better than mhendo. Therefore, I think you, twickster, deserve a warning too. I wouldn’t have said this had you not warned mhendo so easily, by the way. But it seems like you need a taste of your own medicine.
Therefore I’m voting (if my vote has any influence which it probably doesn’t as I’m only a lousy 4 month old guest) that twickster should be given a warning.
As the asshole in question, I’ll just add that my feelings weren’t hurt. The whole thing is just amusing. Hence my lame effort to defuse the situation with a little junior modding. I try not to take anything said here by anyone too seriously.
I know this isn’t an official rule or anything, but it seems to me that the OP sets the tone of the thread. If the OP has no political comment, it’s kind of assholish and threadshitty to take political jabs downstream. But if the OP itself contains a political remark, even a brief one, it’s only to be expected that posters might respond to it.
