Two officers responding to a call at a grocery store parking lot were shot to death by one of the people in the car they approached. Occupants were told to get out of the car, they did, and suddenly one guy shot the two cops in the head, leaped back into the car(he wasn’t the original driver) and took off.
The store is in the center of town, the neighborhood lower middle class I’d call it. It’s where I do most of my grocery shopping, as it’s less than a mile from my house, and directly on my route home from work.
I was awakened by the helicopter buzzing over the center of town, over and over, and then by an automatic phone call alerting central residents to the event. About 6:00AM, twelve hours after the shooting, the scumbag who shot the cops was dead too. He was found holed up in a house, would not respond to requests to surrender, came out of the house with a gun in his hand, and that was that.
The whole town is shocked and saddened by this. The funerals will be Saturday, and I expect they will be huge. The last time an officer was killed on duty here was 1995. I saw part of his procession, and stopped counting at three hundred cars.
I’m kind of creeped out because about the time this all started I was considering a quick trip to that store for an item I needed, and I could have been caught in all the mess. No bystanders were hit, but they could have been.
And I just wish the killings would stop. Little kids, cops on the job, co-workers going postal, it’s hard to feel safe.
This is giving the Phelps and the WBC an excuse to stay home and not go to Conneticut too. Maybe there will be enough people lining the streets to block the WBC from view.
Sorry to sound so down, I needed to write this out and vent some feelings.
