Two Week Notice at a New Job?

I have been working in my current job for only a month. I am still within the 90 day mandatory probationary period. Recently circumstances have arisen that require me to move out of state. Am I required to give two weeks notice in this situation? I figure no because once I tell the employer I will no longer be working for them they will not want to waste anymore time or money to train me. Plus I will not be putting this job on a resume or using them for references anyway.

Any one else been in this situation? What did you do? Those dopers in management roles, what would you do to an employee in my situation? What would you prefer for an employee to do?

If you’re in an “employment at will” state you aren’t required to give any notice at any time.

However, the “polite” thing is to tell your employer of your plans and ask whether they need time to get another person in your place, or would simply prefer you to leave.

Of course, if you want to absolutely be paid for those two weeks, I suppose the best thing to do is tell your employer on a Friday afternoon that you won’t be back on Monday.

I once quit a job on my second day. I basically told my manager that I knew I wouldn’t be working there in a month, so I wasn’t going to waste his time when he still had a stack of resumes from other people he may be willing to hire. He thanked me and dismissed me.

I would say if you were in your 90 day probation period, you could walk whenever you want and management may even appreciate it.

I would explain the circumstances and give the employer the courtesy of the 2 week notice. If they would rather you leave prior to that, be prepared to accept that decision and by all means don’t expect to be paid unless you work during that period. Giving a 2 week notice does not obligate the employer to pay you if they decide to ask you to leave earlier.
