Two weeks to..... Oblivion

I can do better than that.

Where to get the topic of conversation for Daedric shrine quests: Read the book “Modern Heretics”, either in the Arcana University’s mystic archives (ground floor) or in Cloud Top Temple. That should give you the “daedric shrines” topic of conversation, and talking to the right people will mark certain shrines on your map.

Person to speak to in order to find the shrine:Alves Uvenim in the Leweyiin mage guild.

Or if you haven’t found “Modern Heretics” yet:The shrine is off the road from Lewayiin that runs east of the Upper Niben

Level Requirement for the Nocturnal Shrine:You have to be at least level 10.

To start her quest: After visiting the shrine, visit Leyawiin and speak to a bunch of people using topics of conversation of “Leyawiin” and/or “Rumors”. Someone will mention that Weebam-Na and Bejeen have been talking about stealing a valuable jewel. Sounds like your quest item, maybe?

Completing her quest: There is a house by the pond (which is by the castle) that both of them live in. Go in and talk to them. They profess innocence, but they’re miiiight jumpy. Leave the building, and go back in, but sneaking. You should get a message to the effect that you’ve overheard them talking about where they stashed the Eye. You should now have a map pointer to the dungeon where the eye is located. There are, I think, at least two trolls outside the dungeon and four inside, so take something with fire magic. Once you get the Eye, bring it back to Nocturnal for the only set of lockpicks you’ll ever need.

Hope that helps!

I had this problem before, but it seemed to go away after I joined the Thieves’ Guild. I’m not sure if that was actually the cause or if it was just a coincidence, but if you’re not already in the Thieves’ Guild it could be worth a shot.

Despite the Jewish smiley, I knew there’d be at least one small whoosh.

I don’t think so; at least, I’ve done 7 so far, and there only seem to be 3 or 4 variations. The one you mentioned sounds like the one where you have to go all the way around the base of the main tower to reach some underground tunnels.

Anyone know how to put things in display cases? I must be missing something. This game is a lot of fun.

You can drop stuff onto the display case once you open it, but to my knowledge you can’t put stuff “in” them since they don’t count as containers.

[nonsequitor] The stats for vampire PC’s are moocho boosted in this game. While it made Morrowind very, very difficult, here, it seems to make you a powerhouse. You can go out in the sun as long as you’ve fed within the last 24 hours and, likewise, people won’t know you’re a vampire if you’ve fed recently so you get no hit to NPC’s reactions to you. [/nonsequitor]

How can you tell a DOT (damage over time) spell from a timed buff/debuff?

I may be wrong about this, but I get the impression if a potion says:

restore 10 health for 30 seconds

this means that it restores 10 health, once a second, for 30 seconds, resulting in 300 health restored over 30 seconds.

However

drain 30 magicka for 30 seconds

this means that you suck 30 magicka from them once, immediately, and that effect lasts for 30 seconds. It’s not a DOT, it’s a timed debuff.

Do I understand this correctly?

If so, how do you know the difference? Unless I overlooked it, the wording seems to be the same.

BTW, for the PC users, I highly recommend the UI Mod available on this thread. It makes the UI less console-looking and fits more on the screen. I’ve also picked up mods that de-murk the water, let you use multiple potions at once (buff over time potions), removed the “Loading Area” messages, and add a guild storage area in the guild halls.

My favorite mods so far are:

  • you can summon one of two very cool extra-dimensional places where you can store all your loot
  • a Ring of Feather which lets you hold encumbrance + 1000 items
  • improved detail appearance of gold coins
  • one that changes the word “fatigue” to “stamina” so that potions, descriptions make more sense

p.s. I ordered an Asus Geforce 6800 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card, the best I can get with AGP, plus more RAM. Help is coming in determining which type of power supply I’ll need to upgrade to. By next week, I’ll be playing with better fps and graphics.

Is it a 6800 GT? If not, then there was a better AGP card available…

I didn’t see any others with 512Mb onboard memory. Oh well, it’s ordered now.

Correction:

  • a Ring of Feather which lets you hold encumbrance + 1000 feather weight

Hmm. What are you hoping to see with this card? I have it, and it doesn’t run Oblivion very well at all.

I just ordered a new computer. Not just to run this game. No, I’d never do that… I needed a new computer to, um, well, I open some big Word documents, and Visual Studio is kinda slow sometimes, and sometimes I need to look at .jpegs so I needed a new video card. Nope, didn’t just drop a lot of money just to play a game at all. I’m far too practical to do something like that.

I give up.

Fed, rested, less cranky now. Athena, I currently have an FX5700 Ultra and am trying to play at 600x480 resolution with most things turned off, the Coolbits fix, and I think a couple .ini file changes. I’ve had no crashes, but expect to play at slightly higher resolution with fps increased and possibly closer to medium graphics settings. It has to be better than what I’ve got. Many people have had good experience with 6800’s, many have not. It seems to be dependent on many factors. I’m told that Oblivion is highly GPU-intensive, hence I went with the 512Mb GPU. I have to try this cheap fix before sinking $3K into a new machine. If it doesn’t work out well enough, then my son can have this computer and I’ll buy another. I don’t know if Gateways are tweakable, but the 6800 is supposed to be tweakable to the GT level.

I’ve been reading boards, asking questions, trying to educate myself, but basically I’m just doing my best.

I know the feeling, Brightpenny. My 6800GT is less than a year old, and it’s the best card I can put in my machine (no pcie, not enough power supply for a better agp card.)

I also should have expanded on what I said - I am not happy with what the 6800GT does, but it’s better than what you describe. I can play on 1024x768 with the grass turned off and most settings at “medium” and it does OK. I can do 1600x900 widescreen indoors.

It gets jerky when fighting, or when a lot of NPCs are around, regardless of indoor or outdoor. Riding a horse is so jerky that I avoid it - it’s just not worth it to me. Running is better, but it’s still not smooth.

I have an older system, too, so that might be part of it. 2.53Mhz and 1Gig RAM. The game is playable, but it’s jerky enough that it cuts down my enjoyment.

That said, I’d say I’m fairly picky about things. If you’re OK with some jerkiness or not seeing grass and having medium textures, or if you have a faster/better machine than mine, you may be OK with the 6800GT. Also, I can’t 100% remember if I have 512K or 258K on the card. I may only have 256.

By the way Athena, did my lil’ walkthrough help you get the Skelaton Key?

Help quick?

placing another order for power supply and I can order a different card too if necessary: 6800GT 256 vs. 6800 512 (not GT)???

Which one is best?

Never mind, sold out from under me.

Zipping my lip now, sorry all.

I honestly haven’t had the time to try it out yet. I will hopefully do it in the next few days, and I’ll let you know!
