From what I understand, she was a 14. But you have to remember, a size 14 back then is equivalent to a size 7/8 nowadays.
Do an ebay search for old patterns and look at the measurements for the various sizes. Size 14/16 were something like 34 (or maybe it was 36, it’s been awhile since I did a search for vintage patterns) for bust measurements. It’s difficult to find larger sizes.
FWIW, before I got so ancient and fat I was a monro-esque girl too. I never had any complaints from the menfolk. I was 39.5-22/23-37.5 in my heyday. It’s only the media that insists upon forcing the 12 year old boy look upon us all as the ONLY standard of beauty.
Whoever said that most men would prefer Nicole Kidman to Marilyn Monroe hasn’t been to a gentlemen’s club to see what type of women are there to fulfill the male fantasy. It isn’t the flat-chested, boyish looking girls (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Time and again men will flock to the stages to tip voluptuous ladies, even ones who have a little extra meat on their bones, while the skinnier girls (even really pretty ones) dance to one or two guys.
No type appeals to every man, but this comes awfully close:
And that is definitely more Monroe than Kidman, but I hope it’s not considered “fat.”
Nah, that’s skinny. She’s got bigger boobs I guess, but I’d pretty much assume all actresses have bags of salt water in their boobs unless I know otherwise. “Skinny” and “flat-chested” aren’t synonymous the way I use the words.
This is the picture I was referring to upthread (the last photo). Her thighs touch and her arm is, well…chubby. No, she’s not a fat pig, but I am saying that some people (me) would find this physique to be chubby and in need of diet and exercise. In my opinion she could stand to lose 15 to 20 lbs.
In my opinion, you have extremely strict, unrealistic ideals for what women should look like, Kalhoun. I’m 5’6", and the last time I was 150 pounds it was from not being able to afford enough food to eat, and I was too skinny. My skeleton is a size 12.
Well, different strokes I guess. I think she looks sexy and curvy and awesome. Shit, I don’t even like girls that way and I would hit that, so there you go.
FWIW, I think Marilyn in that last picture is what most straight (not all) men think of when they think of the ideal woman (ignoring things like brains and personality and sense of humour and all that). I think it tends to be women who prefer a thinner frame on other women. (That is, I know very few guys that think that Victoria Beckham is teh HAWT, but I’ve heard many women say that she has a “perfect body” ya know?)
The pic with her legs touching is awful, I’m with you on that one. The day my thighs meet is the day I go on a massive diet. That could just be the way she’s standing though.
Right, in your experience you are comfortable at 95 pounds because you have a small frame. That’s fair enough, but a larger frame can hold more weight and be comfortable. I’m 5’10" and relatively large in my frame and I am very comfortable at 180. Proportioned, curvy, comfortable.
America’s Next Top Model yesterday featured the contestants getting phtographed for women’s magazines vs men’s. The poses and style varied by the target audience. But I’ve never seen a skinny body like Jaslene’s in a men’s magazine.
Well, nothing can take away from the fact that MM has an absolutely stunning face, even in the photos linked to by Kalhoun. I actually think if you lose too much fat your face ends up looking a LOT worse than when you gain 5-15 lbs. Kidman used to have an incredible face-the last time I saw pics of her she looked like a bat.
I will say that MM does look a little bloaty, maybe those were taken when she started getting into booze-but 15 to 20 is incredibly harsh. She’d be back to normal by losing 5 to 10 in those shots. She’s nowhere close to fat though. Just looks like she took a cruise vacation.
Yeah, “chiselled cheekbones” are nice, but “sunken cheeks” is not quite the look I go for. I like women that thave substance when you wrap your arms around them. I don’t like putting my arm around someone who feels like a bag of coathangers.
My finacee is slim and athletic, but she still has enough body fat that she doesn’t feel wirey or ropey under her skin.
That’s how I feel. I tried to think that it was the way she was standing, but think about it. Could you make your thighs tough without doing a massive contortion? I don’t think I could.
Well, I know I have strict ideas for myself (which I am falling woefully short of these days). I don’t think it’s fair to call her fat; I was wrong when I chose that word. I should have said “chubby” which I stand by. I also think it takes all kinds to please all kinds. I just couldn’t stand myself if I was a chubby as she is. I don’t feel the need to avert my eyes by any means.
I think my current situation with my weight may have influenced the somewhat harsh stance I took yesterday. Of course, she’s beautiful. I would just withhold lunch from her for a month or so.
Also, back when Marilyn was in her heyday women didn’t work out like we do now. Not many actresses had a toned physique, which is my preference. She was the ideal then, not now. If she was around today I think she’d have a body like Scarlett Johannsen, who is curvy but in shape.
