What on earth is with the rear bumper/spare wheel ma-jig?

The first thing that comes to my mind are some of those c1960 Ramblers.
I think back to the 30s or so when cats had spares stored in the back of the car exterior. Which still looked much classier than what I saw looking at a 1980s Chrysler with one.
Since the OP didn;t restrict it too just US/Euro models, I give you the East German Trabant: https://revsinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Trabant-front-3-4.jpg
And if that is not offensive enough, Try this arfticle on the 9 Ugliest Soviet Cars of All Time (note: have eyewash available). 9 Ugliest Soviet Cars Of All Time (1 That's Stunning)
No, just no! The Trabbi is one of the cutest cars ever, it looks just like a car I would have painted at four years. It also has a cardboard/plastic hybrid body and a two-stroke engine, what’s not to love? (except the fact that East Germans had to wait 10-15 years between ordering a new Trabant and delivery…)
My first car, a 1988 Monte Carlo. Absolutely disgusting. I think my mom was doing her best to make sure I didn’t pick up any girls.
It looks downright evil, at least in this black color.
It’s probably just me, but I find most of those Cool As Fuck!
Mine was not black, it was a metallic evening blue, which made it look less evil and more dorky.
When I complained to my mother she said “it’s sporty! it’s got sporty lines!” and that multiplied the disgust by 1000x
Apart from that, it must be noted that the author of the article is confused about the difference between “Soviet Union” and “eastern block”. It’s quite jarring.
UAZ created a 4x4 van in 1965 for civilian and military use.
The UAZ-452 has a reputation for being an incredibly rugged vehicle for those living in rural eastern European communities. Unfortunately, it’s offroading capability is the 452’s only redeeming quality. In terms of aesthetics, most of the body appears to be a bland copy of the iconic VW Type 2 bus.
VW? Looks more like they borrowed from Britain:
It looks amazing, like a Grand National or GNX. Those are high on my list.
