Another fantastic episode. Seriously, I don’t think there’s been a one where the writing has disappointed me.
There was a lot going on but I particularly liked how we got the first glimpse that Mark isn’t totally happy with his role as Wilhelmina’s flying monkey.
Other awesome things:
Willie punching out Jerry O’Connell in the bar. For the first time I felt bad for her that she didn’t get to become editor-in-chief after all her scheming.
Santos standing up for Justin on the train. I love that kid.
Becks staying on the line to hear Daniel and the Chin have sex. Heh. I can’t believe that’s the same guy who played Graham during season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (he was one of the soldier guys). He got way hotter.
Who’s Becks? I’ve never seen him before or even heard him mentioned. Of course, I haven’t been watching since the beginning; was there more with him earlier in the show’s run?
Becks is a buddy (college buddy? Can’t remember) of Daniel’s. He first appeared during Fashion Week, encouraging Daniel to whore it up to get over being dumped on national TV by Sophia.
I really loved this episode. I was completely blindsided by Jerry O’Connell’s monumental dickitude and that was just such an awesome gaspy heart-rending moment. I loved Santos coming to Justin’s defense on the subway. The whole “I don’t understand my kid, but he’s my kid so don’t mess with him” business was so great. And dang, Justin can sing!
OTOH, Betty’s Meets The Girlfriend and Christine’s dress/no dress storyline were painfully obvious. Overall, though, I have to give strong props to the ep for the Justin storylin and the Alexis storyline. And lest I forget to mention, the character development for Marc was subtle but great.
I hope so too! I wonder if, now that her Henry affair has been spoiled, they will bring in a new potential love interest. (They probably will, as, well, it appears to be fun for the show to exhibit “ugly” + ambitious = little fulfillment and lots of romantic rejection.)
Now that Alexis has come in as a full character, we’re probably going to be seeing a lot more of her development via “now that I’m not a boy, what do I do with myself?” stuff, in addition to her coping with the fact that the world knows that she used to have a penis. At least it’s apparent that she’s looking out for her little brother, much to Willie’s dissatisfaction. At least Willie is well-suited for the job she has now.
The actress playing Charlie seems always to play bit parts where she’s named Charlie. I didn’t recognize her until she said her character’s name, but she was Charlie on Heroes a few weeks back, too.
I love him. I feel weird saying that about a 13 year old, but I don’t mean it in that way :D. I just love him. And I love a show that’s brave enough to have a character like Justin - we’ve all KNOWN Justins, but we’ve never seen Justins on television before.
Damn, I love this show. I think it’s even surpassed The Office for me, which I never expected ANY show to do.
I’ve been thinking about Betty and Henry and Charlie. Charlie and Betty are a lot alike, even to making the same jokes. Do you think Henry was initially drawn to Betty because she reminded him of Charlie? How will this play out?
I guess we need to see more of Charlie, but with what they gave us last night, if I were Henry, I’d be torn between them.
What was Charlie doing at Mode anyway? Is she working there? Or did she just meet Henry for lunch?
I agree that Justin is pretty awesome. I have always liked his character, and his acting but tonight with him singing and dancing on the subway, that was great!
About him being like the character in real life - doesn’t shock me at all. I think that character would be very hard for a real 13 year old to play unless the kid was really like that.
And yeah good work to Ugly Betty for having a character like him on the show - and a mom who rocks and now a dad who gets it too.
I assume she was just meeting Henry for lunch. I assumed that Henry liked Betty because she was somewhat like Charlie, but he thought she was not afraid to move to New York. So Betty was attractive to him. But now Charlie loves New York, so Henry has to stick with his first love.
I also realized last night that using an LA Subway station as a replacement for a NYC subway station is a stretch. LA subways are lit a lot differently and usually have the trains arriving on each side of the station with one platform instead of two separate platforms for the trains going in the opposite direction.
