Ugly Betty: the last few episodes thread

He’s a Driver’s Ed instructor among “uddah tings”. (It’s been implied his father’s in the mob and Bobby has ‘connections’ but isn’t really a mobster himself.)

The planet Stoopid. ANY high profile paid writing gig is not so much a foot in the door as a whole leg up to the thigh.

I wonder if NYC would require a Driver’s Ed instructor to have an education degree, or if any licensed driving instructor would qualify for the job. (At my high school- which was in the sticks admittedly- Driver’s Ed was taught by coaches and teachers of other subjects who had a free period and took some kind of certification course to teach Driver’s Ed; no idea if there are any colleges that actually offer degrees in Driver’s Ed.)

i mean, he denies the mob business pretty adamantly. however he’s getting front row tickets to beyonce, drives a decent car, never seems to have to go to work, and he’s NOT in the mob? Hilda’s considering marrying this guy because he denies it?

plus i think at the very beginning he said he was doing driver’s ed for the love of teaching, or something to that effect. i was just wondering if we’re just supposed to nod and smile and “believe” that he’s not in the mob like hilda’s doing or if it’s something that the audience is suppose to pick up on.

Wilhemina Slater: worst AA sponsor ever.

I’m still watching, and will to the end.

Speaking of, Daniel really should have been given the heads up that “yler-Tay hasn’t been told al-Cay is his ather-Fay”. In fact “he’s an alcoholic” might not have been a bad idea either since Claire should have expected Daniel taking him out on the town might include drinking. And Tyler should have expected a sponsor who says “Oh, don’t beat yourself up if you go off the wagon” isn’t really one you want to listen to.

Well, finally an episode worthy of being one of the last!
Lots happened - and most of it interesting/funny/touching…the planned surprise party for Justin’s “coming out” was great!
The wedding, and all things leading up to it, was pretty good - especially the final dance with the actual coming out party.
Glad to see the Henry story resolved - was hoping it wouldn’t end there with him.
I do, however, dread the implication that Daniel and Betty…I shudder to think of it and hope they really, really don’t go there!
Nice final scene - will be eager to see how that pans out next time.

Next week the grand finale - and will be interested in seeing how it all wraps up. I really do hope Betty plops over the pond and takes the job - I mean, hasn’t that been her dream and goal for the entire run of the show? (Although having the head honcho from London fly over just to offer her the job? Yeah, that’ll happen…)

All in all - they FINALLY started to wrap things up in short order, and most of it for the good.

I assume that he was in New York on other business and figured as long as he was there he might as well stop by and offer Betty the job in person.

Hmm…I thought he said, “I flew over to see you…” or something like that. Might have mis-heard it.

I watched it online this morning and haven’t watched it all (I fast forwarded through the Tyler/Claire/Wilhelmina scenes- I’ll catch those later) but this was the best episode in a long time. Several little twists I didn’t see coming:

-The Silver Fox being Amanda’s father

-The London part of the job offer (the job offer was obvious, but the London part was a surprise)

-Betty accepting the London offer (though I think that one won’t happen)

Yeah, he’s just a little too wussy. First it was his baby mama and now it’s his baby; Betty’s never going to be first.

I know, 'ight! There’s no chemistry there. I’m hoping the wedding it supposedly ends with is Marc and Cliff. (Or, for wild card, Claire and Wilhelmina might be interesting- time they consummated this agression- just kidding.)

That was hysterical. A female co-worker who watches the show asked me, earnestly, “What was wrong with that? I thought that’d be a gay teenager’s dream!” and I almost pulled a Marc gasp as my testicles ascended into my upper torso. I told her that it’s every gay teenager’s dream perhaps to be accepted for who he is and like “it ain’t no thing”, but to imagine that on the week of her first period she’d come home and there was a huge “WELCOME TO WOMANHOOD! HAPPY FIRST MENSTRUAL CYCLE!” party with little feminine hygiene party favors and “Girl You’ll Be a Woman Soon!” blaring from a boombox and a cake decorated with little RedHot candies- oh, and the boy you have a crush on is one of the guests- that’s about how embarassing this would be.

I hated Marc’s pompadour or whatever it was incidentally. And I’m so glad they finally did beef up the Justin:Marc relationship- for a couple of seasons it was non-existent yet it always made you realize there was more to Marc than ambitchion.

For reals? I always thought those two were going to have failed after failed romances until they finally realized they’re perfect for each other. Well, until Daniel realized she’s perfect for him. I imagine she’ll reject him romantically, even though she has always loved him.

Hope Betty takes the London job. Why not? Even if she and Daniel realize their mutual love, it’s a quick flight NY to London, especially for a rich exec like Daniel. Don’t the Meades have London offices anyway?

Justin’s story ended nicely. That was sweet. Of course I knew Ignacio would turn into the city’s biggest, queeniest PFLAG-er you’ve ever seen, but it was great how Bobby was the one to see reason about the coming out surprise party. He was such a ringer for the bigoted unaccepting macho straight guy but they didn’t go there.

Agree about Marc & Silver Fox’s hair. I haven’t liked many of Marc’s hairstyles this season.

Show of hands, who didn’t realize the instant Claire walked into the same room as Wili with a pool nearby, what was going to happen?

So next week is the last?

Yep. Don’t know if it’s 1 or 2 hours.

Favorite lines:

Ignacio (talking about the gay pride flag): Gays don’t have a favorite color- they like them all.

(Then about Marc)They love big entrances.
[then later]They like their exits too.

Marc: Just because a gay man’s mother doesn’t except his homosexuality does not mean that I will never have… that THEY will never have a healthy relationship.

I also like that Justin and Austin exchanged bracelets.

They don’t have many storylines left to finish up, and most past characters have made their reappearance. I wonder if Claire’s old prison buddy will show up? Cliff could show up, but the actor’s busy with Stargate Universe so I’m not expecting it. Other than the Tyler thing, what’s left?

1 hr of wrapping up tyler and tearful goodbyes, and 1 hr of “one year later” shots?

betty did not look good in her dress. not a bridesmaid dress, and not a very appropriate color.

also, in the back of my mind i was thinking, why was amanda and grey fox at the wedding to begin with? for that matter, why was amanda in london? hilda definitely has other friends.

last nitpick, how did tyler get through security with a gun?

Does anybody know what designer did the outfit Claire was wearing in the final scene? Whoever made it, it’s smokin’.

I have no guesses or comments to make other than I’m sad to see it go. I’ve loved it from the beginning and I will love it to the end! I couldn’t bring myself to delete the latest episode and I’m sure I won’t delete the final one for a while either.

Sigh.

Oh and just now I was reading the description for next week and it says “Amanda mourns the loss of a loved one.” Wonder who that will be?

Spoiled if you really don’t want to know:

Halston, her mother’s ancient dog, dies.

Oh for the love of Pete! I can live with that though :D.

I assumed he was already dead since he hasn’t been seen on the show in forever even though they’ve shown Amanda & Marc’s apartment several times. I can’t remember if he lived with her at Betty’s. Amanda gets money for keeping the dog so it was no surprise she never mentioned his death.

I blame it’s demise on the Writer’s Strike (which put it on a long hiatus, forced a quick resolution to some drawn out threads, and also seemed to cost some chemistry), too much time spent on Daniel plotlines (he’s just not that interesting a character). Last season was barely worth watching, but it regained it’s momentum this season but unfortunately too little too late and then the real kiss of death- moving it around like it’s running from the law in the schedule so that the audiences could barely keep up with it. Pity because the recent episodes had some of the cutest and funniest moments: Kristen Johnson as the Amanda+20 years character was always great (though my favorite character no longer on the show was Octavia Spencer as ‘Nacho’s’ deranged social worker from season 1).

There’s a rumor on the interwebs that Mark Indelicato (Justin) will be guesting on Glee. I can’t think of a better match of kid and show- he’s way more talented than that Bieber fetus (not that this is saying much [though I’ll give Bieber that he can dance]). Indelicato says he’s taking a break for a while to do something with Vogue (I think that’s the one- one of the fashion mags) and go to regular school, but I’m guessing a few months of that and he’ll miss the limelight and paychecks and return to TV if something worthy is offered.

Christopher Gorham is quite probably the sexiest nerd (to be believable as a nerd) in TV history. He has a lot of projects lined up on IMDB. I think Michael Urie (Marc) will probably be the one who has the most typecasting problems. I think the sisters will be fine career wise and Amanda might explode- funny, pretty, talented, etc.- and of Vanessa Williams was a warhorse going in and will stay one. I really hope Tony Plana gets another great role; Ignacio may be my favorite TV dad of all time.

I thought the finale was sweet but lacking.

I don’t think they showed Betty’s reaction to being wooed by Daniel well enough.

Loved Betty’s scream upon opening her freezer.

Actually, I thought they did a decent job wrapping everything up with a nice bow.

Pretty much all of the characters were given their due - plot lines closed, hints about what happens, issues resolved.

Glad to see Betty march on to the beat of her own drummer - and she seemed happy. Plus, she didn’t swoon at seeing Daniel and you got the impression “maybe someday” but no hurry on that front.

Was kind of cool that Justin seemed to have the wisdom to give her that final push.

So, all in all, I think the ending was pretty satisfying and covered just about everything.

And seeing the word “Ugly” slowly fade away in the last frame was a nice touch.
