UK Dopers: How Are Plans For Olympics Coming Along?

So far, I have only seen the occasional promo on NBC for the upcoming summer Olympic games and was wondering if everything is moving along on schedule over there?

I know in the past, many countries have been caught in a last minute crunch getting venues completed, or running into problems with transportation issues or security or whatever. Are Londoners planning to flee the city and sublet apartments for huge sums? How are ticket sales?

I am by no means a big sports fan, but I do like watching some of the Olympics games (swimming, gymnastics) and like to see the opening ceremony. Speaking of which - any big names performing in the opening ceremony?

I worked in Munich during the 1972 Olympics. Needless to say, it was memorable for many reasons - not all good.

Just wondering how plans are coming along and if there is any excitement brewing or political infighting or…?

Yeah, and how’s that repaving project coming along?

I dunno if it’s true, but I heard Daniel Craig would be part of the opening ceremony as James Bond.

There are still some ticket sales to come eg the football ones haven’t yet gone on sale because the draw for the competition isn’t until the 26th April, but all the tickets released so far have been heavily over-subscribed.

As far as I know all the venues are complete, as is the athletes village. At the very least, there’s no media talk of things being behind schedule.

Personally I’m really looking forward to it, but then I’m not in London. Londoners may have a different view.

The Olympic torch is going to be going more-or-less past my house, and I’ll make the effort to see that I think.

I don’t think much is known about the opening ceremony other than the artistic director is Danny Boyle of Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours fame, so who the hell knows what he is going to come up with! The music is being done by the dance duo Underworld, who have worked with Boyle before.

Electrocuted toilet-diving one-armed zombies, natch.

Okay, now I’m interested.
