UK dopers: Is this comprehensible Scottish? (Robin Williams)

I debated whether to put this here or in Cafe Society, but I think this is more of a factual query.

In this clip at the beginning, is Robin Williams just speaking nonsense or does it actually mean something in Scottish? Even if its gibberish, is a fair representation of how Scottish people talk?

It is gibberish and does sound somewhat like what drunken Glaswegian may sound to you if you couldn’t understand what was really being said.

It’s not a bad parody of how some people with very broad Glaswegian accents might speak during a heavy session at the pub. Not all of us, though. I’m from Glasgow, and Americans don’t generally have any trouble understanding me - which is just as well given that I live in New Jersey.

As ticker said, the actual words are gibberish.

I didn’t click on it, but I assume it’s his bit about golf being invented by drunken Scots…?

Yep! One of the funnier things you will ever hear!

Robin Williams is trying to sound like his friend Billy Connolly. The accent is dreadful - it’s about Mike Myers’ standard ie shit.

I’m a little less harsh. Americans seem to have a lot of difficulty with Scottish accents, particularly strong Weegie ones. Since it’s intended to be incomprehensible, I’ll say it’s a decent effort.

Ah, I thought it seemed as though he was sort of copying Billy Connolly (who uses rather an odd accent, btw).

It’s not terrific, but I suppose I’ve heard worse. Now if he wants to talk about golf, he might want to work on a St. Andrews accent, ye ken.

Aargh, no! Hell, even Scottish people have trouble understanding Fifers.

Billy’s accent nowadays is of Sheena Easton proportions. Almost, but not quite, a full Lulu.

Hell, I had managed to forget about Sheena Easton.

I’d forgotten about her, too. I recall seeing her booed at Glasgow Green when she played there in that “Big Day Out” music event in the 90s. Accent was a factor in this, IIRC.

Given that the average American wouldn’t know a Glaswegian from any other Scot by accent (let alone a Scot from an Aussie!), I don’t think it matters much how authentic he is.

Totally agree but R.Williams has never been known for his acting ability.

God, I love the golf routine!

“And then at the end I’ll give ye a flat part, with a little flag ta give ye some fuckin’ hooope!”
