UK Dopers...the Suffolk Strangler?

YIKES! Ten bodies in five days??

What’s the scuttlebutt?

Actually five bodies in 10 days (thought I’d missed some MAJOR developments there!), but still pretty grim.

Crap, you’re right. I did that backwards.

It’s mostly prostitutes, right? Any comparison to Jack the Ripper?

Here is a Pit thread about this crime spree. Here is Steve Huff’s entry on the crime, read the comments too.

No, it’s mostly people.

Their job isn’t really relevant except for putting them in greater danger.

I heard a radio interview with a prostitute who said “If someone comes up to us what are we supposed to do? We’re only teenagers”

Yeah, I thought to myself, “You could start off by not being a hooker and get a job”

Does that make me a bad person?

Well firstly, they *have * a job. Prostitution is not illegal. Many prostitutes manage to pay National Insurance and Tax.

Secondly, what job would you recommend they get? Ipswich isn’t the easiest area to find work in as it is, especially for people who are likely to have a poor education or a drug problem. Not to mention the fact that most jobs for the young do not have full minimum wage. Prostitution is a sure-fire way to get money for addiction/pay the rent. What do McDonald’s pay again?

Now you may have some moral issues with them being sex workers. That’s fine, I’m not quibbling with that. But they were people deserving of respect irregardless of their job.

This is local to me. The Pit thread records plenty of my comments already.

The mood here has moved on from shock, to sadness about how these ordinary women ended up in the hell of drug addiction. And it’s a small enough place that everybody either knew at least one of them, or has some close connection to one of the families. The local paper has moved from the sensationalism which was being pitted, to setting up a ‘condolence fund’ and this evening’s edition has got two pages of letters they’ve received.

But, if they’re being targetted because they’re prostitutes, then THAT is relevant to the case.

It makes you a naive one.

**Guinastasia ** I think you are perhaps confusing my comments with the high emotions running in the pit thread (which I’m not going to be posting to). I don’t have a problem with the media stating that they were prostitutes.

I felt that **Ivylass’s ** comment came across as slightly dismissive of the danger this man poses to ALL women in the area. I really don’t feel that their job matters too much. Every prostitute in the country could be magically spirited away and this man would still want to murder women. I could of course be entirely wrong about what **Ivylass ** wanted to say which is why I was just emphasising that the victims were people rather than their job description. I’m not wishing to get combative about this.

No other comparison, really. He hasn’t mutilated bodies, for instance.

What’s also worth noting is that while the Yorkshire Ripper is remembered for targetting prostitues, he has other victims as well. Hence the advice from the police that no women go out alone at night in Ipswich.

I’m not disparaging them for being prostitutes, just that the killer seems to have targeted only prostitutes. If all the women had been dwarfs or single mothers with triplet sons, I would have made the same comment.

I didn’t deep-down think you would make such an insensitive comment. To me it did come across as saying that they were ‘just’ prostitutes. To be honest I was puzzled by it more than anything since I’ve never preceived you to be particularly judgemental or dismissive of people.

Well, we don’t know that, do we? I mean, this person, whoever he is, might have something specific against prostitutes, and only want to murder them.

Sorry, “perceived”.

Tired.

No problem.

He may be targeting prostitutes. But just because it’s prostitutes that are dying doesn’t mean the police should treat this any differently than say, a rash of murders of college students.

If all he wanted to do was murder prostitutes he’d be killing male and female indiscriminately.

:dubious:

Why? How do you know that?

Ok, he could have something specific against female prostitutes.
