Huh? Either your implication is that middle-class college students would get greater attention, or that these murders don’t deserve any particular focus on the backgrounds of the victims. If the latter is true, then it’s very sad that you feel this way, and a lot of people won’t agree.
Uh, I think she’s saying the exact opposite-that OTHER people might dismiss these crimes because they were “only prostitutes”.
Jack the Ripper killed a woman named Mary Ann Nichols.
The Ipswitch Ripper killed Annette Nichols.
The Ipswitch investigation is led by Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull.
William Withey Gull was a Royal physician lately suspected of being Jack.
Maybe I watch too many movies.
He is NOT the Ipswich Ripper. The victims have not been mutilated, so why use that stupid label?
There are not a real lot of similarities IMHO- apart from hookers being murdered. And, as it has been acknowledged it is a dangerous trade. Apart from physical threat, there is the disease factor and substance abuse which (I am told) is not uncommon.
What is unusual here is the number of bodies found in such a short time span.
I don’t care of their occupation. I find it unspeakably sad that so many young women have never had the opportunity to live their lives- whatever that might have been.
From my extensive research (ie, true crime shows on TV), I’ve heard that prostitutes seem to be targeted by serial killers because going off with strangers is part of their job, whereas most other people would refuse to follow a stranger on his say so. Possibly he’s killing prostitutes because he wants to kill *someone * and prostitutes are simply the most convenient.
Largely that is true. The serial killer with a passionate hatred of prostitutes is more common in fiction than real life.
Also because the alarm isn’t raised so quickly when they disappear, and there isn’t the same level of public concern when it’s “just a prostitute”. I remember that the Yorkshire Ripper investigation only went into full alert after a student was murdered in Leeds.
Though I agree, I’d say that the contempt that society heaps on prostitutes, combined with the fact that their profession turns their bodies into an object/commodity in peoples’ eyes, perhaps makes it that much ‘easier’ to murder them.
The Suffolk Strangler… A Profile. An interesting read.
I wish the media wouldn’t give serial criminals titles. I understand why it happens, of course: they have to catch the reader’s eye or viewer’s ear, and “the guy in Suffolk who’s been killing women, mostly by strangling them,” or “the guy who’s been shooting people from a moving vehicle in Virginia and Maryland and D.C.” are not as catchy as “The Suffolk Strangler” or “The D.C. Sniper”. All the same, though, people like that have got to be getting an extra rush from knowing that they have an alter ego, like a superhero. (Or superanti-hero.)
On reading that link I see that there is mention of a “chubby man” driving a BMW . I am sure that I heard last night on the BBC news that this man had been ruled out as being a suspect.
Can you find a news link verifying this? I’ll post it as an update there if you don’t want to.
I have done a quick search but cannot find anything except for this :- Independant
Which seems to suggest that the police aren’t giving much credence to the story of the BMW. But I am sure I did hear the BBC reporter say that the driver had been eliminated from their enquiries.
Totally agree…
I’ve a friend who’s studying criminology and she’s done extensive research on serial killers, she reckons it’s a fella who drives a van who’s doing this. Possibly a delivery man.
makes Prostitutes the “perfect” victim, the perception being no one will notice they’re missing and fewer will care…
I would have thought that a better target in that sort of case would be single men. If I were to collapse or disappear right now, I wouldn’t be missed until Monday, and even then they might simply think I was not well.
The rugby club is looking for new hookers.
The police seem to be confident of making an arrest. They have 50 people they are looking into. Fifty! How much filth is walking the streets that they have 50 people of interest?
You do realise this did start as a ‘missing person’ case in the local media, well before the first body was found?
Single men are physically more difficult to overpower than single women. Generally. Heavier, stronger, and all that.
