UK Dopers...the Suffolk Strangler?

The Yorkshire ripper started on his vengance trail after a prostitute laughed at him and then short changed him.

Because many people look on prostitution with distaste in the U.K. it tends to be swept under the carpet and forgotten about.

If sex workers were given dedicated premises away from areas likely to cause offense by local authorities ,with a resident Veneariologist and security staff supplied by the Council it would cut the risk to them considerably, freeze out the pimps and from the customers point of view prevent robberies and assaults on them.

This could be paid for out of the tax and National Insurance that virtually all sex workers in Britain ARE NOT paying.

I’d feel alot easier in my mind about the women who are dear to me in my life if drunken ,young males had a quick ,easy way to relieve their frustrations after a night out lessening the risk of rapes,
and no doubt there are loving couples who have sexual compatibility problems that lead to divorce that regulated prostitution might alleviate.

And now as someone who looks on the business as a safety valve for society I will incur the inevitable suspicion that I’m a customer myself LOL!

Really? :dubious:

The US has had several serial killers of late that targeted prostitutes in greater number:

Green River Murders and the BTK Murders.

Plus, if I am not mistaken, there were also a rash of prostitutes murdered in and around Vancouver, Canada a few years back.

The point being, these murderers were preying on “easy” victims they could coax into a car and drive off to a secluded area - plus they seemed to have issues with the profession of prostitute.

Um, BTK didn’t target prostitutes as his main victims! He targeted women that were home alone for the most part, with the exception of his first murders, which was of a family. One of them was a twelve year old girl! The Green River killer did, so you are half right.

Yes I was in front of the telly and too knackered to change channels ,so out of sheer bone idleness I watched an entire programme about the Yorkshire Ripper ,not normally my cup of tea though it turned out to be quite interesting.

I think it was one of the Discovery channels but I couldn’t swear to it .
And it was in the last two weeks at most .

That bit of info just happened to stick in my mind and NOT for any reasons concerning people with incredibly small penisis,I said NOT ok! just leave it alone damn you to heck and back !

The BBC is reporting that someone has been arrested in connection with the case .

BBC News

Sky News is reporting that the man arrested is Tom Stephens who gave an interview with the Sunday Mirror yesterday.

And here’s his Myspace page.

Blimey. If he lives in Trimley, and works for Tesco, it’s probably the one up the road from me.

Who wants to give this Michael Duffy a quick geography lesson?

One of NYC’s most prolific serial killers Joel Rifkin killed 17 prostitutes

If you go here BBC and click onto “Listen Tom Stephens” (Real Player) you can hear an interview the BBC made with him.

I just hope people won’t be gathering outside the police station or courthouse, like they did when Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman’s murderers were arrested. Innocent people get hurt in these scrums.

Yep, he was from my local supermarket. Which ironically is within sight of the police HQ where the camera crews have been camped out for weeks.

CNN says that the photos on that site show him in “bizarre poses”. Either I’m jaded, or the site has already been altered, but I don’t see any photos that strike me as unusual. Not for Myspace, anyway.

How do the BBC justify making the interview public? I realise that it would be hard to resist releasing such material, but it was made on the understanding that it would not be broadcast. All they say is that a copy was subsequently given to the police, but so what?

That aside, anyone else have the gut feeling that this guy is not the killer? An attention seeker, maybe, but if he is the killer he’s not exactly lying low, is he?

Unless they have some sort of homosexual tendencies, most seriel killers seem to have a lot of anger issues towards women.

Prostitutes obviously make a tempting target because they
a) generally work outside late at night when there’s not too many people around
b) tend to be outside the mainstream of society
c) generally keep a low profile anyway so might not be missed for awhile
d) their job requires them to duck out of sight with strange men for periods of time

Not that I’m an expert on serial killers…or prostitutes.

So they may have caught the guy? Hooray for modern police work!

I don’t understand the objection. Plenty of Panorama-style TV investigations, and other newspaper ones, have uncovered important evidence of crimes. In many cases, it’s broadcast and also supplied to the police.

Would you be happier if the media were to supply the recording to the police and not broadcast it?

It’s a violation of journalistic ethics. Even the BBC’s own Newsnight raised the point, and reading Paxman’s body language I didn’t think he was terribly proud to be on their payroll tonight. They interviewed the man on the understanding that his words would not be broadcast, and then they broadcast the interview before he has even been charged with any crime. Isn’t he supposed to be presumed innocent? That is tabloid-level ethics. If the Daily Mail did it, you’d be all over it.

Would a kind Brit Doper translate this housing term for a yank. I thank you.
