Well, the following text accompanies the audio interview on the BBC website (doesn’t seem to allow a direct link, but it’s linked to from the front page of news.bbc.co.uk at the time of writing):
“This interview was conducted by BBC reporter Trudy Barber. Mr Stephens’ request was that it was for background purposes only and not originally intended for broadcast. Subsequently, a copy of the interview was made available to the police.”

That’s how the Unabomber was caught. The NYT printed his manifesto, and David Kaczynski, who already had an inkling about why he hadn’t heard from his brother in many years, read it and said, “That’s Ted…Hello, FBI?” Granted, it was not quite the same situation, because Kaczynski demanded publication, but both these guys were willing to talk, is the point.
