UK EU In/Out referendum-:Polling day thread.

Speaking for myself, I like democracy fine, it’s direct democracy that has proved to be toxic in the UK. Seriously. This referendum has resolved nothing, and the result will be contested by whichever side wins for years. All it’s done is heighten hatred and divide the country.

Far better that these things be left to the (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) calmer, more reasonable, House of Commons.

Gibralter votes Remain by a large margin!

Game over Brexiters, game over.

That’s from an Online poll on a British website, so I really doubt that number is accurate.

Steady on lisiate, Gibraltar is only a fraction of 1 percent of the registered voters.

I should have used a smiley I guess.

I sort of wish the UK had some sort of cantonal system so each electorate could go it’s own way on such matters…

It is like that in national elections, but in a referendum every vote counts the same and is added to the total. Genuine democracy.

The Sunderland result is very much on the high side of Leave expectations. The game is afoot…

The pound just fell 3% in seconds. Holy moly.

The pound is taking a pounding.
Its down by 6% now.

Swindon has voted to leave.

Remain Campaign can officially panic now.

Alec Salmond has managed to make it into a Scottish issue right now on BBC.

Have you encountered Eck before?

For the dumb Americans among us, why are they reporting results by city (precinct)? Does that actually mean anything?

Not really. It’s just where they are counting the votes. And so the results come from there. It’s the total that counts.

The whole thing is a horror show. Leave is way stronger in Britain than I would have thought. I hope Remain wins because there will be a huge impact on Ireland for obvious reasons.

Whenever I’ve watched elections, whatever direction is seen first seems to always go on to win. On that basis, it’s leave with 1.5 million votes in and comfortably in front.

The margin has narrowed, but there’s still less than 6% reporting. Depending upon where the votes have been reported from there can be monster swings. It’s gonna be a wild ride.

From an outsider’s perspective, I hope they remain. I don’t see any good outcomes for them if they leave, any more than there are any good outcomes to be found if a state seceded from the US.

I wonder if we’ll see a case where Parliament will implement the Brexit and the PM will advise the Monarch to withhold Royal Assent like what happened in 1708.

The referendum is only advisory, but the PM doesn’t have anything like the political capital needed to go against the vote.

Holy shit. London’s not going to be enough - we’re leaving …
