UK EU In/Out referendum-:Polling day thread.

No. The PM has already said that he will respect the result of the Brexit vote and will implement it.

(Plus, it should be noted, implementing the Brexit would be first and foremost a matter for the executive. They have to give notice to Brussels, conduct the ensuing negotations, agree on terms of withdrawal. Only at that stage - which is likely to be a couple of years off - will they actually have any legislation to present to Parliament for approval.)

Watching on BBC America. I’m impressed with the impartiality of the coverage and their professionalism. Some of the graphics are awesome, like the stalks coming out of the map with their heights representing the sizes of the voting areas. They began the broadcast I think pretty much thinking Remain would prevail, but after a big win for Leave they seem to have changed their thinking. If people are still watching at this hour over there, that’s impressive as well.

Looking like Leave might win out, will it take Cameron out as well? If he resigns, does the party just name someone else or do they have to call new elections?

All of Europe is watching. If Merkel went to bed she got up again.

Money markets all over the world are electric. Hong Kong is frantic.

This is normal in Europe. It’s the US that’s not

[snip]

That’s weird. My BBC America is showing “Silence of the Lambs”.

Too close to call, and just now the Remain took the lead.

Remain in front for the first time on the one I’m watching

In the same BBC source I saw that about 20 minutes ago Remain was ahead for a few ticks.

Currently I think it is because the City of London is being counted, not sure if that will be enough.

Just now:

Leave

1,997,917

Remain

Lambeth ad Wandsworth declared. The pattern will be Leave edging ahead and London boroughs countering for Remain. London only has about 8-10 big guns left… Can’t see it will be enough without help from Manchester and Birmingham …

That’s some regional disparity I’m seeing there. Scotland’s on over 60% Remain, NI a clear Remain vote, England and Wales pretty solidly Leave.

I note Nicola Sturgeon’s not thumping the Future Scottish Independence barrel very hard just yet, but you have to imagine that will rear it’s head if Leave takes the honours.

Well if north of the Humber stays uniformly yellow (stay) and south goes blue (leave)and the overall margin is less than 1% on 70% turnout I reckon he’s got a fair point.

Sterling ended NY trading hours just under 1.50, was ~1.40 around an hour ago, now back to 1.45, so I suppose somebody is seeing more ‘remainish’ results just recently.

Watching on Sky News, in Chicago. I don’t like this at all.

Gee, wonder how many billions of pounds have changed hands in the last few hours?

It is extraordinary. It really is. Against most media, against all the political parties, against the polls and the markets …

Ignorant Yank here, but why can’t Parliament override this vote if “Leave” ends up winning?

oooooh leaving!

Extraordinary? Methinks just human nature
It’s the difference between your persona in public and in private.

If you are inclined towards Leave and you are in a group of mixed views you might express Remain sentiments to be less confrontational. But alone in the polling booth, as Jeremy Clarkson might well say “Leave? How hard can it be?”

Because it’s a democracy.

The referendum doesn’t have legal force, but that’s not really relevant practically.
