I was looking in an old IBM-PC manual and in the “HEY RETARDS! Instructions for moving your PC” (Which literally said to turn off power, remove all cables and move the equipment, reattach cables and apply power:rolleyes: . **However, ** One thing did catch my attention-They say unplug PC from wall then disconnect perhiperals. BUT the footnote says In the UK by law you are required to disconnect the phone line before unplugging the device from the wall . Wha???
Are they tallking about hanging up a call connection before pulling out the phone jack?
They merely say that instead of unplugging the PC from the wall THEN unplugging the phone cable you are required BY LAW to unplug any device hooked to the phone jack before power is removed?!?
That’s what’s got me all wacked out, I can just imagine someone unplugging their PC then unhooking the modem causing the entire UK phone system to crash and having scotland yard show up and arrest you:wally I’m just wondering why there is a law about the unplugging of devices from a phone jack?
I imagine it’s to prevent the phone line being the only thing earthing the computer. If anything happened that caused a discharge it would go down the phone line rather than through the electrical earth.
I’m not aware of this still being a law. Perhaps modems and the phone system are better protected now. It doesn’t surprise me that it was law though. The British phone system used to be a over-legislated, state-run monopoly that dictated exactly what you were allowed to connect and who was allowed to connect it, i.e only what British Telecom personally approved and only their employees.
