UK Snap Election: 8 June 2017

Holy fuck - the exit poll.
Con: 314
Lab: 266
SNP: 34
Lib Dem: 14
UKIP: 0

Well, that’s me staying up. Expect increasingly badly spelled posts after midnight

Dammit!

I have to get up at 5am and drive 90 miles to work. There is no way I’m going to sleep now.

On this prediction, neither side can form a viable coalition. It’s bonkers and sensational … IF accurate.

The yoof came!

FYI, futures markets will reopen at 11 PM U.K. time. It’ll be interesting.

Even if the exit poll is out a bit, and the Tories do scrape a majority, May is fatally wounded, surely.

Tory/Lib Dem is possible, if they’re willing. Or if they’re prepared to support a minority government on a case by case basis.

May will surely have to resign, right? Prime Minister Boris Johnson?

Who would replace her?

If the Tories will cancel Brexit, it’s a deal.

As I may have mentioned earlier, that faint hope is the reason I voted LibDem. Looks like they will hold the balance of power, if the poll is right.

I’ve no idea to be honest. Hammond? Surely not Boris?

I don’t think either would be better. Boris would at least be entertaining though.

I don’t see any way the Tories would allow a second vote on Brexit.

Thinking a bit wider, we’re rapidly burning through the two-year Article 50 timescale. A hung parliament, or even a very small Tory majority, is not helpful at all there. The prospect of another GE later in the year, even.

'kin hell! The strategic pessimism paid off. Feels good to be surprised. This is a horror show for May, a massive vindication for Corbyn and a slap in the face for Sturgeon, who had to expect some losses from the 2015 peak but not c. 20

Unless some sort of agreement is thrashed out, hung Parliament implies chaotic Brexit though. At least a massive waste of time till a new election is called.

Maybe that’s the plan. No deal is better than a bad deal…

How big a working majority is needed? I realize the exit poll, assuming it’s exact and the SNP, Lib Dems, and Labour caucesed together would be an exact 314-314 split. That’s obviously hung, but would just the Lib Dems for a 328-300 Tory majority be big enough?

326 seats - half the Parliament (650 seats) plus one.

We’re in Holy shit! territory across England and Scotland. Wales looks Labour. Northern Ireland will be coalition fodder.

This will be all over the place, student towns, retirement towns, Brexit towns, etc,e tc.

I seem to recall a similar projection at 10 PM in the 1992 election, and in the end, Major ended up with a majority of 21 (336 out of 625).

Firstly there’s other small parties involved, mostly from Northern Ireland, so it would be in effect 314-314. 328 seats would be workable in theory, but it looks like it won’t happen - the Tory guy on Channel 4 just laughed off the suggestion.

Also Gina Miller should fuck off. She’s had her 15 minutes, and has nothing interesting to say.
