Do not engage truthSeeker2 in his anti-Islamist hijack. He’s been warned, so no need to respond.

Agreed. The polling all seemed to show that the UK would remain in the EU. I think people said one thing and then voted another way. I can very much see how many Americans will do the same. Many of the same forces that led to the UK situation are at play in America.
8 reasons leave won the referendum.
The final result was 51.9% leave and 48.1% remain. They won with over a million vote margin. A solid and convincing win.
The early analysis of the win brings up many of the restrictions and obligations placed on EU members. I don’t fully understand why being a member is so burdensome. The EU is much more than a trade agreement. I wouldn’t be surprised if another country eventually leaves.
Britain still has the G8 and it’s ties to the US. Leaving may eventually work to their advantage. Giving them more options. Only time will tell.
Change is always hard. There’s a lot of uncertainty about the UK’s future. I wonder if this will be a time the Queen calls for unity and encourages support for the election? There should be a way she can do that without taking a political position.
Because many of those rules restrict the wealthy and powerful, who will now be able to screw over the people who foolishly voted for it.
I expect this will have the opposite effect; Britain will probably end up as a Horrible Example that will make everyone else terrified of leaving.

Agreed, many of the same forces. But Trump has gone out of his way to antagonize many large groups of people: women, Latinos, blacks,…, and will have trouble overcoming this. At least I hope so.
BBC has excellent coverage. I learned so much about the EU today. Answered questions I’ve wandered about for years.
An all you need to know guide to the referendum.
What is the EU and how does it work?

Agreed. 100% of Britains are racist especially the ones who voted to stay with the EU.
There is little controversial in your linked post. Virtually everyone who grows up internalizes some racist tendencies. It’s impossible not to. Those who voted are expressing a hatred and fear of outsiders, fueled by their underlying racist views. It’s not an unreasonable distinction to try to make.
Well, today in the news Obama, i.e. the White House, Hillary, and Republicans are all making very clear the US & UK have a Special Relationship that is in no way going to change. The US has made it clear we will do what we can to ensure the transition occurs smoothly. I’d take that as a not-so-subtle warning to the EU that they can be pissy if they want, but there will be no gripping of UK balls while the US is around.
It seems like it, although there would be a lot of pressure on him to call a General Election on taking office.
Canada made a similar annonucement, stressing both halves. My interpretation was, rather, “Everything is normal. Please be calm and tranquil. Please do not further bash the world economy in your panic.” Plus a lot of enlightened self-interest: “Okay, you’re divorcing, but I still want to do business with you both. Please don’t make it any weirder than it already is.”
Heh. Apparently “move to Canada” is surging in Google searches in the UK.
I guess “move to Canada” isn’t just Americans’ favorite plan B.
Other top Google searches in the UK after the polls had closed:
“What is the EU?” and “What is Brexit?”
As a local radio host put it today, that’s like “Ready, Fire, Aim!” or “What exactly did we just vote to leave?”
That’s not as easy as it used to be, though. He’d have to rush through a repeal of fixed-term parliaments, stage a loss of a no-confidence vote (I think this has happened in Germany), or get the consent of a substantial number of opposition MPs.
Sure. Until they do the conversion and figure out just what -30 C amounts to …
Anyone else remember, back in early or mid 60’s, when the World Was Shocked by the French blocking the UK’s membership in the ECC (early European trade market)?
This, and the nomination of Goldwater by the GOP (Barry was slightly to the Right of Attila) were my earliest memories of Things Political.
I thought the cycle was 30-50 years. This re-wind and replay is a bit late…
Maybe now the EU will get new leadership and reform? They’ve certainly gotten a clear wake up call that change is needed.
I’ve been reading comments that it might have been better if the UK had stayed and fought for reform from inside the EU. I guess that’s what they’ve been trying to do without any success? It may require a shock like the UK leaving for the EU to do anything.
In other news, I have read that the EU just found 1 GB of empty space in its hard disk…
