If all he’d done was comment about how depressing it was to see the small number of people, I’d be right with you. But he intentionally went on to talk about how they were only wearing masks for the camera, implying both that the people in Times Square were hypocrites for wearing masks and also that the wearing of masks isn’t necessary, and that’s where he went from being okay to being a flat out jerk, especially considering the forum.
Well, I am so we cancel each other out. And offending people was clearly exactly what was intended so good going, UV. This time though, he gets to go think about it for a week and see if that chills his shit out some.
UltraVires, sometimes I watch a TV show, and I don’t like it. That’s when I turn it off. That’s it, a few minutes later I hardly remember it. It’s not something I’d start a thread about.
Ivory Tower Denizen, so sorry about your mother. Jesus.
So don’t watch it. What did you expect to see there?
Never mind – I didn’t read your follow up. But those who are defending UltraVires? C’mon – if that’s the most “depressing site” you see this year, even on TV, consider yourself fortunate.
He came to CS to comment critically on a show the he turned off, instead of just forgetting about it. . OK so far, I guess, that’s what CS is for. He didn’t like the staging, which didn’t look sincere. Masked for stage effect, not safety. OK, too, I guess.
Oh, is that what he is doing?
Did I miss the suspension announcement?
Talk about trolling.
^ This.
Mask wearing has become more and more common, to the point at work we very, very rarely have to speak to anyone about the requirement anymore. If anything, the other customers exert peer pressure, the anti-mask contingent can be located by listening for the other customers haranguing them as they try to go through the store.
The mask wearing was NOT “just for the cameras”. ESPECIALLY since the people who were there as audience were frontline workers who know, much more than the average person, just how important masking wearing is.
For me, it’s not the comment about them wearing the masks for TV. That could be generously interpreted as meaning they wore them so they can actually do the TV show. But with the comment about the mask thing feeling “forced” definitely turned into a claim that they don’t actually need to wear a mask.
And obviously anyone who isn’t anti-mask would get mad at that remark. It would start a heated discussion, which might be okay for GD, but not for Cafe society.
I’m not sure I would have jumped straight to a suspension over it, but I support modding him for it.
(I will presume @What_Exit looked at the poster’s history to decide for a suspension instead of Warning.)
That’s some great mod thinking right there.
You mean like deliberately quoting out of context, like you did by not quoting the last part of that sentence?
It wasn’t threadshitting by the SDMB definition, whether you support modding it or not.
You could perhaps say hijacking, but I don’t really think so as it was a direct response to what was said in the OP, and it was certainly understandable under the circumstances.
To claim that IvoryTowerDenizen is more deserving of criticism than Ultra is plain nonsense.
I can’t come up with any specific examples, but I think it is. It is a classic formula; someone starts a thread about “I like/dislike x”, someone else comes in saying “You are wrong for liking/disliking x because personal anecdote, you insensitive clod!” I’m pretty sure that those posts are usually modded. Choosing not to mod them out of compassion doesn’t change that.
I (sort of) agree with this.
Just one week? That’s utter bullshit. Not nearly long enough for such obvious trolling, @What_Exit.
Good, you’re learning!
ITD wasn’t responding to the stated dislike of the event. The post was a response to the notion that the masks were only being worn as a “fake news” sort of thing for the sake of the cameras. In other words, that the masks are unnecessary and nobody should have been wearing them in the first place.
The outrage was justified and, much like the OP itself, not actually related to the television program.
In other words, UltraVires threadshat his own op
Yep!
I suppose the question is whether you can threadshit in a poisoned well.
