Unable to make new folders- computer problem

Title says it all. Normally, when I right-click my desktop (windows 98se) one of the options has always been ‘new’, which includes a sub-menu that allows me to make new folders. For whatever reason, this is no longer an option. Anyone have any idea as to why? Or what I can do to fix the problem? Thanks in advance.

ArrrMatey, is the whole “New” menu gone or just “New…” -> “Folder”?

If it’s the former, you can fix this by altering your system registry. If you’re familiar with such things, you can skip the following instructions and warning.

If you’ve never altered your registry before, you get to it by doing the following:
[ol][li] Click on your Start menu[/li][li] Click on Run[/li][li] Type Regedit[/li][li] Press OK[/ol] [/li]Before you do anything to your registry, you want to back it up:
[ol][li] With the Registry Editor open, go to File, Export Registry[/li][li] Select a location to save the file to and name the file[/li][li] Select All from the Export Range[/li][li] Click Save[/ol][/li]
(If any changes you’ve made to your registry result in system problems, you can just come back to the Registry Editor and Import this backup file.)

With all that out of the way, to fix your specific problem:
[ol][li] Open the Registry Editor[/li][li] Go to **HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ Background \ shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers \ New **[/li][li] The value for (Default) in the right-hand pane should be {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}[/li][/ol]
Just copy and paste that bit of red text. Hope this helps!
