I kinda doubt that was that sincere since he asked someone to post in this thread a link to his sdmn lj post. His comments there inspired not a small amount of the drama in this thread, and he went out of his way to make it public (we really don’t like banned posters “posting by proxy” either, it’s a bad precedent. When we ban you it means DO NOT POST here anymore. Don’t make just one sock for just one more dig. Don’t get people to post for you so that you can get in one more vent. So anyone, if you get banned in the future and want to make sure the world knows your feelings on it, get permission from an Admin before having people post for you, please. We will probably be Ok with a “Joe says he’s will miss all his friends here, he wuvs ooo muches, please email him” post, but Satan’s sort of “posting from beyond the grave!” bit where he can essentially still participate on the board is frowned upon.).

Or having the plug pulled, maybe. Even though I think it’s a Good Thing to be able to discuss stuff like this, there’s a point of diminishing returns, and I suspect that got reached a page or more back.
Speaking of which, I must admit that I kinda blanch at the idea of seeing a two year old list of infractions and warnings leading to Satan’s banning. Now that SoulFrost has clarified his remarks, it looks as if, once again, nobody’s arguing that Satan shouldn’t have been banned to begin with. So what’s the point?
But before the plug is pulled, Arnold, what’s with “EdZotti”? (As in, no space between his first and last names about eight straight times on page 7.) A typo or three I can understand, but now you’ve got me wondering if he changed his name.

I don’t know exactly what, but the entry was referring to some drama involving Opal and somebody that he was getting dragged into that was driving him a little batty, it wasn’t just a spontaneous rumination on his lingering issues.

Seriously, it’s water under the bridge as far as I am concerned. I vented myself thoroughly in that thread, and have never had the urge to pursue the matter further.
Any discussion of whether Satan should rise from the dead should focus on the probability of his maintaining a reasonable level of decorum in the future, not in redressing slights from the past.

My position stands: you folks have the right and responsibility to make the decisions you feel best for the board. I have the responsibility to accept them.
If my opinion counted, I’d say that, despite hard feelings Brian may have towards several staff members, his e-mailed letter requesting readmittance indicates that he would make a strong sincere effort to stay within the rules, and if he should violate in any small way, make an immediate apology when a mod puts on his/her hat.
But that’s my opinion, from knowing the man personally. And I’m not the guy with the responsibility to make the right decisions for the boards.
You folks are. And you are understandably afraid that his irritation at past incidents he felt unjust might cause him to break rules and flame mods. again.
I meant exactly what I said – I disagree with the outcome but I accept fully what you decided. I’ve been there, and I know how it feels.
If the wound keeps getting picked at, it’s hard to let it heal.
Besides, I’ll be the first one to say I carry a grudge. I can still vent - admirably, if I may say so - about things that happened even longer ago than that, if I feel some great harm has been made to me. I don’t blame Satan one bit.

I’d like to make a closing request.
This process has been something not at all unlike a parole hearing. The punished criminal, removed from the bosom of his beloved community, has come to the parole board to beg to be allowed to try again, with supervsion, to show that he can be a productive member of that society. Testimony of supporters and detractors has been heard, evidence has been presented. The board has deliberated, and parole denied.
This time.
So how about the board just do this, then we can let it go: tell us when the “prisoner” may reapply to the board. Give him a date.
In the meantime, still removed from the community, he can be visited via his LJ, and some of the “board members” are even friendly with the criminal, I believe.
Until now, it wasn’t even known that the criminal wanted to be a part of the community again. It probably also wasn’t known that a great many in the community either actively wanted him back or had absolutely no objection.
Now that it is known, rather than sentence the criminal to life…can we just call the question tabled, and be given a date for a new hearing down the road? Please? (And by new hearing, I don’t mean another thread. Just a time when Brian himself can ask again. In email. To the staff.Let some time pass, let everyone get on with their lives, maybe think about this a little more, and see if any positions have shifted. Things change. People change. It could happen. )
Stoid, while I understand the intention behind your above post, if the admins give Satan a specific date on which he may reapply for reinstatement to this community then they must do so for all banned posters.
The SDMB is neither the Star Chamber nor the SCOTUS, and I think that in this thread it has been turned into a bit of each.
While I would personally encourage Satan to reapply for reinstatement at a future time, I don’t think that publicly asking the admins to give him a specific date on which to do so is helping his cause.
Hey, they know his address, they can give it to him privately, the same way he can apply.
Alot of the noise in this thread was of the “It’s tearing us apart!” variety. This can all be accomplished very quietly. The most anyone might know is that Satan is reinstated. I find it unimaginable that we would be torn apart by that.
And, as has been largely agreed, Satan and a few others were members of a higher order than most of the banned, and actually earned and deserve some special considerations.

A review of this thread will reveal an overwhelmingly positive view of having Brian return. That has got to count for something someday. And it also has to say a whole lot about how his return will affect us.

I thought the matter was done with months ago with Satan’s banning. Then we have milroyj initially disbelieving me when I say that Satan was worse than Collounsbury IMHO. After milroyj I thought we were done with it. Then SoulFrost comes along and says “that wasn’t sufficient reason to ban him” and Stoid immediately getting pissed off again. Now SoulFrost is no longer complaining (don’t know about Stoid). But who knows how many Dopers are waiting in the wings to come in here and say “that was a piss-poor reason to ban him?” Maybe this information will prove useful to them, and convince some lurkers who are currently of the opinion that the administrators were abusing their powers, as they are so often accused of. Also help prove my assertion that Satan was worse than Collounsbury.
Never fear, I’m not going to post every infraction of Satan’s. I would have to search for them and life’s too short.

The details on what Ed Zotti found objectionable have already been discussed in this thread and can be found in Satan’s banning friend to which SoulFrost kindly provided a link.
Why did Ed Zotti give Satan a final warning, and why was Satan on thin ice? Because of Satan’s repeated use of insults in Great Debates, a forum in which personal attacks are forbidden, a fact well known to Satan. Below is a representative (but not exhaustive) sample.
