Under the Boardwalk – 2 versions – What’s the Story?

“Under the Boardwalk” was a big hit for the Drifters in 1964. Twenty or so years later Oldies stations started playing an alternate version of the song that sounds exactly like the original except that the line, “Under the boardwalk / We’ll be falling in love”, was replaced with “Under the boardwalk / We’ll be making love”.

Does anyone know how the 2 versions came about? I’ve got plenty of my own speculative theories about this, but if you really know the true story, I’d like to hear it.

Cites would be very useful.

Lyrics.

Please note that “…we’ll be making love” appears in verses one and two, and “…we’ll be falling in love” appears in verse three. All part of the same release.

Bruce Willis covered the song with the Temptations for backup. He should stick to acting.

As metioned in a previous thread, there are indeed two verions of this song; “making love” is only mentioned in the stereo version.
