Underrated beauties

You’ve been a Doper since 2003 and you’ve never heard of Firefly?

That’s unpossible!

Now that I think about it you are correct. But also as I think on it the sleazy photography almost immediately thought Bailey was a former nude model herself.

agreed!

agreed!

I can’t figure out how to parse the second sentence. I seriously doubt Jan Smithers did any nude modeling (outside of the naked traffic accident, which her family denied), and Bailey would be even less likely.

BTW, it turned out that the photographer really had the hots for Andy. And the funniest part of that revelation (which I may misremember because I was laughing so hard) was Andy’s moan that he felt so used — and Bailey’s sarcastically condescending “there, there, that’s all right.”

How to parse my second sentence:

When Fever & Bailey go to the sleazy photographer’s studio to scam him out of the photographs and negatives of a nude Jennifer, at one point the photographer says that he recognizes Bailey (or whatever pseudonym she was using) as having been featured in some magazine shoot. I do not think we are meant to believe he is correct, only that he thinks she is good-looking enough for it to be plausible.

Had never heard of the real-life traffic accident story.

A couple of weeks ago, Newsweek did a 60’s issue. In it they showed a 1966 Newsweek cover of Jan as a teenager - perhaps they were referring to that in the show.

Just in case you’re not kidding…

First of all, as Poysyn said, the photographer took naughty photos of Jennifer, not Bailey. I see that you’ve acknowledged that point, so perhaps we can agree that it’s moot.

Second, I don’t know where you got the notion that people “always talked about how hot she was.” Jennifer Marlowe got all the attention on that show, not Bailey. Oh sure, there were occasional references to Bailey’s beauty, but they were decidedly rare.

Outside of the show, Loni Anderson’s looks got a lot more attention that those of Jan Smithers. She’s the one who was heralded as a pinup girl and a sex symbol. Jan languished in relative obscurity.

Yeah, I stand by my claim. Jan Smithers was terribly underrated.

I didn’t watch all of her movies, but I don’t know if Janeane Garofalo was ever cast in a role that really took advantage of her appearance.

I’ve always found Francesca Annis to be breathtakingly beautiful. When I heard that Ralph Fiennes had left Alex Kingston for her despite the age difference, I thought “smart man.”

But then he cheated on Francesca and got dumped. Fool.

I’ve always thought she was incredibly hot.

No, and possibly because you live in a cave?

If I may clear up some confusion, in the episode, Johnny and Bailey pose as publishers. As part of her cover, Bailey states that she was a Playboy playmate.

Two gorgeous women who were cursed with awful names:
Greer Garson
Glynis Johns

That was probably was because the 70s. TV shows during that era always had that weird thing about the brunette who endlessly complained about how guys overlooked her for the hot blonde. Never mind many or even most guys in the audience thought the brunette was hotter. Think Three’s Company, Too Close For Comfort, Eight Is Enough, etc.

Not exaclty underrated, but I think Julie Bowen is much prettier than Sofia Vergarra on Modern Family.

Yes.

It’s Firefly, it’s not on, and personally I only know it thanks to a marathon at a friend’s house (he had the boxed set containing both the series and the movie) but I loved it. There were a couple of “twists” I was seeing waaay in advance but I think that’s simply because Joss Whedon and I have read too many of the same stories. Great visuals also; this thread has only shown three of the ladies but the laddies weren’t anything to complain about.

ETA: Vergara, guys. Two Rs, not three.

Bailey never did that, though. She was unfairly overshadowed by Jennifer, but she never complained about it — nor did you often hear people comment in-story about her attractiveness.
