I also like the occasional salami & muenster cheese sandwich (on white bread that has a coating of mustard on each side).
Oooohhh - feta cheese or some type of blue cheese, just eaten out of the hand. Or mozzerella.
My dad’s rice balls (I forget the Italian name): Baseball-sized spheres of rice with tomato sauce, mozzerella & ricotta in the middle that’re coated with seasoned bread crumbs and fried up. Yummm.
It’s even better if you throw in some of those frozen peas and pearl onions, but just heated throught…don’t cook the peas into mush…one friend of mine watched in amazement as I ate this concoction, which he called “white trash food.” (He was amazed because normally, I’m a rather skilled cook, and tend to make things that are rather more elaborate, even if it’s just for myself - usually from scratch. He’d seriously never seen me eat a processed food product. I think he still hasn’t gotten over it.)
Even better, add some frozen peas and a spoonful of green chile, and you’ve really got something there.
I’ll go for the PBnJ or the Grilled Cheese with a bowl of tomato soup. I wish I had somma’dat right now.
This thread is making me hungry.
** Home Fries! ** with anything but especailly fried eggs and sausage. Not those godawful frozen hash brown things.Real cooked potatoes fried in oil or bacon grease with onion.Fried crispy on the outside.
Also would 2nd the liverwurst, tongue, and just about any deli sandwich. But nice spicy gulden’s or other dark horseradishy type mustard.Rye for sandwiches, wheat for toast for yolk dipping.
I think they’re called suppli al telefono; I saw a recipe and photo in a cookbook once, and one of these days I’ll try making them (the next time I have some leftover risotto…yeah, right!). They looked yummy!
And on that note, off to cook breakfast, which today I think will be a spinach and dill havarti omelete, with maybe some home fries…you guys are making me hungry!
I grew up in New England and loved seafood from a very early age. As far as I’m concerned, if it swims, it’s terrific. BUT, one of my best friends, who grew up on the water in coastal Maine AND whose dad is a lobsterman, can’t stand any kind of fish - go figure.
As for underrated kiddie foods or snacks? PEEPS!! Peeps squished into some peanut butter between two slices of bread are even better - kinda like a really firm Fluffernutter.
What a scrummy thread! I’ve not seen anything revolting yet - okay except for perhaps tongue…
Zoe next time you make a peanut butter and mayo sarnie, add a slice of mild (or medium) cheddar cheese. Miracle Whip will make it a zing all the better, but mayo works in a pinch. This is quite tasty. The hubby tried several times trying to get me to try it until I finally gave in. Glad I did
Duckster, have you ever had peanut butter (chunky is best) with Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup? Absolutely fantastic! Just a teaspoon or so is all you need. Perhaps it’s because the sweetness in the peanut butter takes away the saltiness of the soup. For whatever reason, it is nice.
Gee, this makes me sound like a peanut butter nut…hehehe…nut… but I’m not, really.
American underrated grub: Spaghettios, Kraft mac-n-cheese with extra milk in just so it’s a bit soupy, PBJ sarnies, grilled cheese with tomato soup…
English underrated grub: Beans on toast, mushy peas, pork pies, all English sausages and bacon, Yorkshire puddin’s…
Another vote to meatloaf…I miss my Mom’s homemade meatloaf, which was even better the next day cold in a sandwich with plenty of “Gulden’s Spicy Brown” mustard.
If cooked properly, plain basmati rice is one cheap, easy snack.
