Unemployment in Texas while going to school

I’m unfortunate to live in a state that cares little to help its residents educate themselves. I’ve searched the web and found examples of people talking about going to college after being laid off but my situation is different. I worked full-time at my last job for over two years and have been going back to college part-time since last spring. My hours were cut last week and I got laid off yesterday.

I had no problem registering for unemployment but when I submit for my first payment, it’s going to ask me if I’m attending school and if that interfered with searching for a job. I have to say that yes I’m going to school but fully intend to look for a job anyway and have proven that I can attend school as I am now while working full-time. Texas doesn’t automatically turn people down for unemployment if they’re going to college as long as it doesn’t interfere with finding a job but I can still foresee having issues over this especially since I worked evening shift at my last job and am attending classes in the afternoon.

I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with this situation or is familiar with how the system works. Like I said, I will be looking for a job. (Naturally I’ll be focusing on evening jobs for the duration of the semester.) Dropping during the semester would screw up my transcript. I have enough money to get by for a few weeks if there are delays in receiving my first payment but I can’t make it through the semester. I would really appreciate advice on how to proceed and what to expect.

No idea about Texas but in FL they didn’t care at all. And the VA money I got while going to school doesn’t count as income.

I don’t know about Texas , but when my daughter recently filed for unemployment in NY attending school actually helped her. Although she doesn’t get a full check because she is not available for work one day a week, she is also ( because she is so close to graduation) exempt from the job seeking requirements.

My friend didn’t have a problem either but he’s also a veteran and I believe it works a little differently for vets.

Unfortunately I’m nowhere near finished, I go to school four days a week (but I’m available afterward), and Texas is little like New York. I am curious though why they cut some of her money since she wasn’t available one day when they weren’t going to make her look for a job anyway.

When Bush crashed the economy and I got laid off in Texas I enrolled in a technical course that would allow me to work at a licensed trade that was layoff proof. Any idiot would know that is a good plan, but the idiots who wrote unemployment laws in Texas are a special bunch of IDIOTS and there was a specific rule making one ineligible for unemployment if going to school. I didn’t tell them because if they’re that stupid they’re damn sure not going to realize I’m getting an education instead of looking for work. I satisfied the 5 application a week rule by applying online to all the various Home Depot type places, collected enough unemployment to pay the bills and on the day I passed my licensing exam got a better job than I ever had while everybody in the country was still bitchin and moanin.

They calculated her benefit first, and then decided that she was eligible for this special program that exempts her from seeking work.

I thought about lying but it seems risky. Since it’s illegal, you should probably PM me if you have more to say about it.

Don’t think of it as illegal, think of it as fun.
