unimpressed with windows 10

yes, Microsoft is just going to completely castrate the very notion of WiFi security. That sounds like a smashingly solid business plan.

seriously, a little bit of critical thinking would help you.

Maybe you should learn how to read a post before you mouth off.

I did. you think Microsoft is going to give out people’s WiFi passwords to a bunch of randos just because they’re running Windows 10?

No, I didn’t say I thought that. I specifically said that I didn’t think the notion could be right. Learn how to read.

Maybe you should acquire some “critical thinking” skills before you run around lecturing people on them.

Nice creative and subtle way of dropping insults into GQ. Kudos!

I guess you’ll have to point out to me where I said that. I’ll wait here while you go and find the quote.

Couldn’t find it? Didn’t think so. Because I never made any such suggestion. I understand perfectly well that some people require programs that run on Windows, and i understand that precisely because i am one of those people. In a different thread right now i’m defending Windows and arguing that it’s a good operating system.

But it doesn’t change the fact of what i’ve said: if you ARE, in fact, one of those people (like my mother) who only needs to do stuff like email and web browsing and playing some basic media files, then Ubuntu is perfectly fine.

As an aside, can i just ask, based on your responses to me and to a couple of other people, why you feel a particular need to act like a jerk in this thread? Is this habitual for you, or is it just this thread?

I gotta say. In reading jz78817 posts, they’re light on technical information and heavy on insults and all sorts of irrelevancies (autism! what people’s jobs are!).

I’m suspecting he doesn’t actually know a lot about the topic.

on the contrary, I’ve seen it all.

“Windows 2000 is awful! Games run 20% slower than on Windows 98!”

“Man, Windows XP is ‘Fisher Price’ bullshit! I’m staying on Windows 2000 forever!”

“Vista sucks! I’m staying on XP!”

“Windows 7 is garbage! I’m sticking with XP! What do you mean Microsoft is ending support for a 14 year old OS?”

“Windows 7 is the best ever! Windows 8 sucks ass!”

“Windows 10 is shit! why did they try to change Windows 8?”

Short on technical info (or any useful info really), long on non-technical info. If you like Windows 10, you’re doing a really terrible job of defending it.

you haven’t asked for any “technical info” so I don’t know why you’re bitching about me not giving any.

I did ask for technical info about Windows 10 Wi-Fi. Kanicbird came in with a technical answer. You came in with an insult and a mis-characterization of my post.

Your posts are like anti-PR for Microsoft.

This thread is becoming brain-dead. I am a systems analyst for a mega-corp that has to make different equipment work together on an industrial scale ranging from today until a time before most of you were born.

There is nothing wrong with Windows 10 and it is ignorant if you think so. Most casual users confuse user interfaces with operating systems but they are not the same thing at all. The operating system is what runs the basic functions of the computer itself. The user interface is how you interact with it but that is just a shell that can be changed either a little or completely almost as easily as your desktop wallpaper. That doesn’t change the fundamentals of the operating system but it makes some people happier.

The reason why I say it is ignorant to cling to Windows 7 or Windows 8x just because of preference is because you are ignoring reality. There is nothing wrong with Windows 7 or even Windows 8.1 but they WILL become unsupported by Microsoft in the not so distant future. Windows 10 is the new version and will be for quite some time so you can move to it now or later but it has to happen at some point.

Where the misunderstanding happens is that most people don’t understand that the way Windows 10 behaves on installation is not the only way that it can work. I didn’t like the way it behaved when I first installed it because I don’t like big tiles or any Metro style interfaces. However, all of the options are still there to make it look and behave almost exactly like Windows 7 or any hybrid idea that you want as long as you take a few minutes to customize it to your preferences.

If you don’t want to figure out what you want, other people have already done most of it for you. Just download the free and very reputable Windows 10 Classic Shell and tell ii what you want your computer to look like and it will do it for you in a few clicks.

I get tired of hearing people complain about Operating System issues when they are really just referring to user interface issues that are easy to fix. My Windows 10 home computer works almost exactly like my Windows 7 work computers with a few enhancements because I know what I am doing and configured them that way.

you’re talking to people who screamed and cried that Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP after 14 years.

Then why do they keep patching it?

ETA, on the bright side, it’s only 45 seconds between turning the computer on and reading the SDMB. Way faster than it was with Win7.

Well, the OP said he was having problems running his games on Windows 10, so that’s not some issue about the UI. Maybe there’s an easy work around, and maybe a gamer would have the technical capability to be able to track down the workaround, but it’s somewhat unreasonable to expect non-techie people to be able to do this.

I mean, I run Windows 8.2, and I find the default UI irritating, although I have configured it to work the way I want it to. But it wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of non-techie people got frustrated with the UI.

As for XP, well, a lot of companies have legacy code that relies on the way XP was designed. Yeah, they shouldn’t have done it, or they should have upgraded in some ideal world, but that just doesn’t happen in a lot of places. I worked at a company a few years ago that still was running all sorts of legacy crap in languages that it’s almost impossible to find programmers in any more, and I couldn’t get any budget to port. It was owned by a hedge fund that wanted to maximize profits and cut costs so they could sell it. They weren’t interested in spending money on porting code. What are you going to do?
