Tom Cruise for a variety of reasons. I think he is a superb film actor and I think it is evident in everything since his earliest efforts - Taps, All The Right Moves and Risky Business. He has a fantastic resume of memorable roles: *Collateral *, Magnolia, *Jerry Maguire *, *A Few Good Men *, Born on the Fourth of July, *Rain Man *, The Color of Money.
And he achieved all this (plus possibly having sex with Nicole Kidman) without, apparently, being terribly bright and in fact lately seeming to not even be entirely sane.
Anne Heche is in a new network show, and I’ve heard dozens of people comment how they won’t even check out the show because she’s in it. I’ve got no issue with her. And surprisingly, I think the show is decent.
Martha Stewart doesn’t bother me. Ben Affleck doesn’t bother me. Gilbert Gottfried used to make me laugh like a fool during USA Up All Night but I haven’t seen/heard him in years.
I think I might be all the Pauly Shore fans. I think he’s hilarious in Encino Man, Son-in-Law, Jury Duty, and especially Biodome. But I was probably just at the right age (i.e., 8-12) when those movies came out to be able to appreciate them. And I probably like them now more for the nostalgia factor than anything else.
Tom Cruise. Other than his jumping on the couch, I just don’t quite get last year’s memetic wave of “he’s CRAZY!” and “I HATE him!” that went around. Sure, he’s a little nutty, but what does that have to do with anything? There were people BOYCOTTING his films because “he’s crazy.”
I like Keanu Reeves. Most people just have never seen his best work: he’s been quite good in several small films like I Love You to Death, Tune in Tomorrow, Feeling Minnesota, and A Walk in the Clouds.
Same for Ben Affleck. He always seems to do the job onscreen.
Oprah – I know she’s not universally loathed, but people seem to love her or hate her.
She does some good stuff. Where some people see self-aggrandizement, I think of Jesus telling us not to hide our light under a bushel (or something like that).
I also really like Keanu Reeves. And one celeb that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is Kevin Costner… he gets a bum rap a lot of the time, but I really like his work. Yes, even Waterworld.
I think Melanie Griffith is one of the best actors drawing breath. She has the widest range of any actress working.
Jennifer Lopez has the best combination of funny/tough of any actress today. Her performance in *Out of Sight * is a big part of what makes it an utterly flawless movie, which I could watch every day if I were asked to.\
Leonardo DiCaprio is, hands down, the greatest actor of his generation. (No less a personage than Martin Scorsese agrees.) See *A Boy’s Life, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, * and The Departed, and then try to make fun of him because he acquired a teen-girl following after Titanic. A movie in which he was the only actor who even tried to invest his character with some human depth.
John Madden and Chris Berman. They get a lot of loathing, but I enjoy the schtick. Gimme my hohh trailers, multi-legged turkeys, and rocknroll nicknames…
Well, he was painfully unfunny on America’s Home Videos and Full House. If that’s the only place you know him from, then yeah, I can see hating him. Having seen some of his stand-up, though, I consider myself to be a fan. He’s hilariously funny (and unbelievably filthy) when he’s working his own material, not prime-time pablum cranked out by a room full of network hacks.
I don’t “hate” him either. Dislike, definitely, because he can be a real asshole.
But there are so many pro athletes so much worse than Terrell Owens, so much worthier of hatred! The NFL, the NBA and major leaguie baseball are filled with felons, thugs, dope dealers, rapists, and guys with 20 kids by 20 different mothers.
By comparison, Terrell is just an egomaniac and a jerk. Hardly worth a spot on anyone’s hate list.
I’m not a huge fan, but I don’t dislike him. We (my dad, sister, boyfriend, and myself) worked his show last time he came up to Lake Tahoe. He was super-nice to his crew.
There were some parts of his act that were hilarious. He actively incorporated the crew into his schtick and it was great. Especially when he inferred that all of his crew were high as kites - the way he did it was funny as hell.
Let’s see - I’m gonna cast my vote for Tom Cruise. I don’t like him, particularly, but I don’t dislike him, either. Sure, I get the “off” vibe from him, but I live with my crazy ass family, so I’m pretty much used to it by now.
Nar. I forgot - Roseanne. >.< I’m sorry, I just don’t see why everyone is so antagonistic against her. She’s gotten a little weird recently, but I still don’t see why everyone is so mean to her. I think she’s funny.
