Unjust August (Mini-Rants)

My mom was an avid reader, but there weren’t a lot of books in the house. She went to the public library a lot.

Sorry to hear this. Malaise is a good word to describe this condition.
I am also struggling with fatigue, brain fog and anhedonia since my latest bout with Covid last fall. It’s improved but still lingers. There is no treatment.
Sometimes I really have to fight to stay engaged with the world.
I wish you well. You are young and need the energy.

Last year I totally lost my sense of taste and smell.
It’s returned for the most part but it’s still something that never totally resolved.

Yesterday I had to go up to the City (East side of Manhattan) for testing they could only do there and not at my local annex of MSK. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The fact they scheduled me for Labor Day weekend Friday meant we couldn’t drive as we would never get home. So we took the trains.

Going to NYC for anything but something fun really sucks. It is expensive and some places are hard to get to, like MSK. I guess I did OK as I was only stuck in MSK for about 3 hours to get a Special CT Scan and MRI done. This was all in prep for the radiation treatments to wipe out the Prostate Cancer. Thankfully that can be done locally.

After we escaped MSK, we got a very late lunch and we both got egg creams. Nothing like a NYC egg cream. The lunch was tasty also. Then we walked to the Frick, only a 20 minute walk, but my ankles and arches have been bothering me lately and I was already footsore by the time we got the overpriced Art Collection. At 30 dollars per, I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you live in the city and have done every other museum and are a completist. 2 floors, mostly crappy art and not laid out well at all. Bleh.

At this point I was too tired and we got a cab to back to Penn Station, it looked like it was going to be a 25 minute wait for the train back home, but at least it was an express. So under an hour in the train. 19 minutes later, CANCELLED. We found out the draw bridge close to our home was stuck open. Usually they can fix this in under an hour, but occasionally in takes 3+ hours. Panic.

We kept watching the next train, afraid it would also be cancelled, but thankfully it left only 1 minute late. What a long f’ing day.

Oh, insult to injury, some numbnuts parks so close to the car at the Train Station that I couldn’t get in, this was in a half empty lot that by this time was a mostly empty lot. So my wife had to pull the car forward just so I could get in.

I bought a bottle of water at Penn Station and it was $4.27 after tax. WTF?

Under 3 mile cab ride? $33!

@What_Exit

Your day sounds exhausting. I hate people who park so close to my car I can’t open my door.
Bottles of water are so expensive especially in high volume tourist areas and airports. But sometimes you just have to buy one.
Never had an egg cream but would be delighted to try one if I ever make it back to NYC.

This is reasonable, but save some hatred for the people who keep parking spaces at traditional widths without taking into account the fact that today’s cars are (on average) wider.

This was not a large car and there was no reason to even park next to our car in this case. So complete idiot.

@What_Exit that does sound exhausting and stressful during an already stressful time. I hope you can take it easy today!

My rant - eggs. I bought a carton of eggs a few days ago, but the grocery store selection was oddly limited (I thought the supply issue had been fixed by now?) and I bought a brand I normally don’t. I looked them over and none seemed to be broken.

I pulled out the carton to make eggs this morning, and the first one I pull out is broken on the bottom. And so is the next one… A total of 4 out of 12 eggs were busted on the bottom! That’s like $20 worth of broken eggs! (not really but it feels like it)

The shells on the unbroken eggs are so thin that it’s hard to crack them without the entire shell disintegrating at the first tap. So these remaining eggs will be relegated to boiling, and I’ll have to make a store run earlier than expected to get more eggs.

And definitely not this brand again.

The hens were badly (under)fed. :frowning:

My rant?

Fucking FLIES Christ on a pogo stick.

Unfortunately I think you are right - they were “only” $3.50/dozen :frowning:

One trick I taught myself when buying eggs is to run two fingers down the two rows of eggs and make sure each egg moves freely. If an egg doesn’t move, it’s probably cracked on the bottom and stuck to the carton. I got burned too many times buying eggs that looked OK on top but were stuck at the bottom.

I give each egg a half-rotate to check.

I don’t think I’ve ever had such an issue with eggs. Rarely, a carton has one broken egg.

I do try to buy the “least awful life for the chickens” eggs, though, which are more expensive, so that might make a difference.

Due to some mobility issues I’ve been having lately I decided to place a grocery delivery order today. One of the things I ordered was two cartons of eggs, which were on sale for just under $3 each. I’m hoping that the shopper takes the time to check that none of the eggs are cracked.

I’ve always picked up each egg in a carton and flipped them over to look for cracks. It takes a bit of time but I swear every other carton I check has at least one cracked egg so it’s worth it.

I also placed a grocery order today because my back has me in agony but did not order eggs.
Everything I ordered arrived perfectly.
This is only the third time I’ve done this as I do like to get out and shop most days.

Hope yours arrives intact!

I used to do that, but stopped. My natural skill and grace resulted in too many broken eggs.

Or more likely, the eggs were already damaged and it wasn’t apparent until you moved them.

No, no. I dropped them. I dropped them.

When it comes to eggs, I just open the carton to make sure that everything looks OK, and don’t do anything beyond that. I don’t think I’ve ever found anything amiss after doing this superficial check. Never had an egg that was invisibly broken on the bottom.

So I jiggled the carton and each egg moved when I bought them. When I was taking the eggs out of the carton today none of them stuck - it was like they were just barely broken enough that the weight of the egg was enough to keep it from oozing out. I’ll have to start doing what @Atamasama does and flip them over.

I do think this makes a difference too - I try to buy some sort of free range but they were all sold out. Although the tag on the shelf indicated they were selling for $9/dozen, so I can’t imagine they were flying off the shelves… And when did they get so expensive again?!

@LurkMeister good luck, hopefully you won’t have your own little egg rant to add later today…
