Unjust August (Mini-Rants)

I do the same. I don’t buy the super-expensive eggs that imply that the hens reside in luxurious penthouses subsisting on a diet of champagne and caviar, but I generally look for free-run eggs in the moderate (not cheap) price range. I’ve always had good luck with those, my preference being large brown eggs.

I believe you.

I also believe they sell shittier eggs where I live.

My eggs arrived unbroken. I did take the precaution of asking the shopper to check them.

When I do my own shopping I always check. If I find any cracked eggs I swap them for good eggs from another carton, then place the carton with cracked eggs off to the side.

We just had a housefly infestation. It was weird; we’ve NEVER had more than one fly in our house, and suddenly a week ago we had dozens!

We went on a killing rampage (many simultaneous murder methods, the most effective being the good ol’ flyswatter), but within an hour the house would be full again!

Then, four days later, they all disappeared.

This isn’t precisely the same brand, but this is what we have at work.

It is … a popular pastime. The “zissshh” is so satisfying.

Welcome to the club!

My husband has one of those. We also have a bug zapper on top of the DVD shelving in the living room, and a cat who’s an excellent hunter and has been seen catching flies in mid-air.

Disco balls also help with flies so long as there’s some source of light around, particularly outside or in doorways. They work better than a clear bag full of water and look nicer.

My sister has several suspended in her back yard and the few flies that even try to come near end up flying away like a drunken Scotsman.

Well, it’s been a year but I finally ended up going to the ER again. After breakfast this morning I wasn’t feeling well, so I decided to check what my home heart monitor had to say. Heart rate of 120+ and “possible A-fib”. Time to call 911. The EMTs showed up and did their thing, and of course I ended up getting a free ride to the ER.

Well, once I got to the ER and they started running all their tests there were no longer any signs of A-fib. However, there were other problems. The edema which has been causing the problems with my legs, as well as my shortness of breath. So they hooked me up to a magnesium IV and gave me a lasix injection. The latter had the expected result (lasix is a diuretic) which made for an interesting afternoon.

Tuesday I have an appointment with a diuresis clinic. I’m not sure what’s going to happen there; I’m already on lasix, so I’m not sure what further treatment I’m going to get.

Good luck. My dad is going through similar stuff after a lifetime of relatively good health, so I kind of know how hard this all is.

That’s what’s most annoying. Despite being overweight since college I had always been in relatively good health (blood pressure consistently 120/80, etc). Then when I turned 65 everything started falling apart - heart issues, minor liver disease, anemia, and now this. I’ve been telling people for years that my warranty must have expired.

September mini-rants.

Double good luck to you because you and I sound a lot alike. I just turned 60 and I’ve been pretty lucky so far in my life. A shitty appendix here, a bloated gall bladder there and other than that I’ve kept things pretty much under control. As I age, however, I can feel things start to go south.

Simple to make if you have sparkling or soda water around. Traditionally made with Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup, but any chocolate syrup will work.

I am going to try this!

It’s one of my favorite things to make with my Sodastream. I usually use zero-sugar Hershey’s syrup, but plain tastes better. I think Fox’s tastes a little better than Hershey’s, but not usually available here. If I really cared I’d buy a higher quality syrup than Hershey’s, but I’m not that picky!

Hey, thanks for the reminder…that IT’S SEPTEMBER.
nudge, nudge.
