Unknown hardware in Win98SE Device Manager

Hopefully I’ll be able to figure this out myself, but any help would be appreciated.

I’ve installed Win98SE. Previously I had the plain old Win98.

In Device Manager I have an Other Devices entry with PCI Network Controller with a little yellow exclamation mark on it, apparently because the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).

Now, the fun thing is that I have two NICs and a modem. As far as I can see, all three devices have been installed in the Device Manager. So I have no idea what this controller could be.

Any ideas? If I even had a clue as to what it is I could search/download the drivers.

One of your NICs, or mavbe you modem, probably has an additional feature that that Win98 doesn’t recognize. Make sure you install the proper drivers from the manufacturer; that should solve the problem.

Provide more hardware details if you want specific information.

Spot on! Thanks  .

It probably wouldn’t have occurred to me to try the existing devices again for a while. The driver turned out to be on the modem CD. It now shows as an “Other detected devices” “Reserved Device”. No idea what that is, but that clears up the last of my device problems.
