Honestly, if there was a animal welfare organization that didn’t want to outlaw some part of hunting, trapping, fishing, rodeo, religous expression (Santería, etc.), or commercial livestock and poultry raising and slaughter. I wouldn’t be that hard on them. People think that I hate animals, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I do hate this trend of making them more and more equal to humans. It endangers the livelihoods and cultural traditions of many people. I endangers the scientific community’s medical research. It increases food prices. This ignoring of human disaster in this terrible event to focus on animals is another symptom of an animal welfare / animal rights that is out of control.

I don’t know that you’ve noticed. But we have a huge natural disaster that has killed thousands of PEOPLE that has displaced more than a million PEOPLE from homes and jobs in the US. It’s hard to feel sorry for animals in this case.

I gave what I thought I could afford to the Red Cross early, but you’ve motivated me to dig deeper, and I’ve now donated several hundred dollars to animal rescue groups. I’m making some sacrifices to do this, and guess what? I don’t feel evil or vile or any of the other descriptions you’ve flung. I feel good. I’m doing what I can, in the way I feel is appropriate. The hurricane has created an enormous pit of need, and there’s room for positive action and generosity of all kinds. Rage, hate and insults contribute nothing.

I don’t recall seeing any suggestion by anyone (other than yourself) that anyone believes animals are the equal of humans. Could you show me, please? As I’ve said before, they have a non-zero value, so they deserve some assistance. Clearly people deserve more assistance than animals, and they are certainly getting MASSIVELY more help than the animals.
The fact that somebody gives $1 to charity A and $100 to charity B (or provides 100 times more assistance in any capacity) does not imply that they value charity A more than charity B because they didn’t give ALL their donations to charity B.
UB - when are you selling your computer and donating the proceeds to a disaster relief fund (after checking of course that no portion goes to helping animals)? Do you value your computer more than a person?! :eek: The proceeds from selling your computer might be just that little bit extra that saves a life!
One final note - I know some people are helping animals almost exclusively during this catastrophe. Fine. That still doesn’t indicate that they value animals more than people. I’m quite sure they know that many more people are helping people exclusively, and that they far outnumber the people helping animals, so they are comfortable dedicating their own resources to animals. The fact that I can anticipate what others will do affects how I give, and I’m sure it affects how most people give.
