IMHO, part of our duty as a sentient species at the top of the food chain is stewardship for the planet and the creatures that live on it. The domesticated animals in New Orleans are there because of the actions of us humans. Irrational as it may seem, there has been a symbiotic relationship between humans and certain animal species for at least 10,000 years. It’s out responsibility to help out animals as well as humans; not just for the sake of those animals, but for the peace of mind of the humans that, in many ways, depend on them. It’s NOT a zero sum game.

I love how Unregistered Bull seems to have this mental picture of people yanking a bottle of water out of a thirsty child’s hand to give to a stray dog, driving past sick and wounded people to take medicine to a cat, writing a check to the Humane Society instead of to the Red Cross, etc. There’s no concept of being inspired to give more of yourself to multiple causes than you would to one, only that giving anything to one group takes away from another, and thus what you decide to give to had better meet with his approval.
The funny thing is that the only people this zero-sum logic could possibly apply to are people who are giving 100% of their time and money to helping people and/or animals. Most people would feel some hesitation at criticizing those rare folks, but luckily Unregistered Bull doesn’t waste his time with such foolishness. Perhaps this will help. Having compassion for animals does not mean that we have any less for humans. We have an unlimited supply. It’s sort of like love. The more you give away, the more you have left. The person did a kind thing- but it’s not like he’s using up some sort of quota of kindness. He’s got plenty left where that came from.
