So it is fundamentally a choice issue for you? You are effectively saying that because he is already going to be there, and that because there are likely relatively easy things he could do with the return trip that would help humans, but instead he is bringing back animals, that he is making a choice between which of the two to help?

As sometimes happens, people who are brimming over with compassion - for animals - don’t always extend that compassion to people they dislike. And those folks are not spending 100% of their time working on disaster relief.
If pinkfreud’s husband is using his van to benefit animals, and that use would otherwise be wasted, he is doing a kindness. If there is some reasonable way he could make the same use benefit humans, then he is wrong, to that extent. I’m willing to give Mr. pinkfreud the benefit of the doubt, which may be where I differ from UB. And animal welfare is not particularly one of my hot buttons, so that may be where I differ from most other Dopers, at least in this thread.
As in, “You’re going to try to help the people hurt by Katrina? That’s wonderful! And you’re going to bring back a load of pets on the way back? Well, I suppose that’s nice too.”
