It is important to note that unscented and fragrance-free are not the same thing. Masking fragrance is very common, and I have gotten sick even from lipstick (who puts fragrance in lipstick? I can understand teenybopper lip gloss, but a $25 lipstick shouldn’t give me a migraine or make me throw up).
OT, but you’ve hit on another one of my pet peeves. We too use Bounce Free in our household, and as far as I’ve been able to tell, they truly are scent-neutral.
On the other hand, our next-door neighbors have just started using a new brand of dryer sheets. As their vent is on the side of the house that faces us, the stench from them comes right in the window of my computer room, and it’s almost unbearable.
They seem to have some sort of cherry scent to them (and I like cherry), but it’s overwhelmed by the strong chemical odor. I just don’t get how people have been sold on the idea that a smell of anything that powerful is a good thing and somehow signifies “clean.”
They’re just going with the Tide.
I have to hold my breath when I dash down the laundry soap aisle to get something. The overwhelming chemical FRESH! scent can literally make me sick enough to have to sit down. I’ve been in situations where someone’s laundry vent was puking out the stench and I couldn’t get away from it…
I have an extremely poor sense of smell. I tell people I’m like the proverbial canary in a mineshaft; if I can smell your perfume/cologne/deodorant/whatever at all, then you are going to revolt many people.
That said, I’ve been trying to not put too much of anything that might be stinky on, now that I have a couple of new friends that are strongly sensitive to perfumes and the like. I just recently found Speed Stick Unscented at Safeway. I had my friends smell the container (keeping my fingers crossed that they wouldn’t be grossed out), and they said it smelled a little like baking soda and they didn’t find it offensive. (I checked the ingredients; no simple bicarbonates in it, so I don’t know what they were smelling).
That’s the first time I’ve found it. Hopefully they’ll keep it in stock (if not I’ll try to make sure to skip the antipersperant whenever I plan to meet my friends).
