Unsolicited Facebook friend

This has happened to me a handful of times:

I will get a message on Facebook “Joe Shmo has accepted your friend request”.

Except I don’t know Joe and I never sent him a friend request. But now he is my friend. How/why does this happen? Is it a hack attempt? Should I unfriend Joe immediately?

Are your posts publicly viewable, and about subjects that might interest someone? Do you make comments on other people’s posts? Some people may just find your ideas intriguing and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

It will only say “accepted friend request” if the op sent one first.

It happens to me too I don’t know why.

But I didn’t send one. How can someone accept a friend request I never sent?

I haven’t sent a friend request or posted anything or commented on anything or liked anything in over 5 years.

If you haven’t done anything with your account in five years it’s highly possible someone has gotten hold of your password and hijacked your account.

If you have no more use for Facebook, close your account. If you want to leave it open, change your password, then go through your profile, your friends, your favorites, etc. and get rid of anything that’s been included without your knowledge.

I don’t see any other activity on my account that I didn’t authorize.
I use FB to check up on friends and relatives and see how they’re doing. But I don’t comment or post anything. At most I’ll shoot them a private message.

Do this. You’ve been hacked.

Alright. Kind of figured.

I know I get it. It’s happened to me too.
