I realize this is a bit of over-kill, considering how many Pit threads this individual has already garnered, but I don’t want to bump an earlier thread and this pissed me off almost more than anything I’ve read before on the Dope.
In this thread on homosexuality, UnuMondo once again pokes his ugly head around the corner to spew this bullshit:
Well, UnuMondo, thanks for clearing that up for me! I mean, if it wasn’t for your intelligent and judicious contribution to this discussion, I’d never have realized that I was a “young nerd with considerable social and emotional problems”! What would I and the thousands of slash writers out there do without you? Here we are, going through life, being of the opinion that, in general, we slash writers are smart women who are capable of being confident and open with our sexuality, and then here you come to tell us different! Whoopty-fucking-do!
I’ll tell you one thing: slash writers and readers are some of the most emotionally balanced people I know. They are smart, often ridiculously talented writers, and have enough self-confidence and self-esteem to be comfortable with themselves. Which is a hell of a lot more than you’re packing, asshole.
And next time you decide to blissfully insult an entire swath of humanity, why don’t you do it in the Pit instead of in Great Debates, you bloody idiot? And try to provide some cites, if your underdeveloped and rapidly atrophying brain can handle it.
So UnuMondo commits the unpardonable sin of not providing a cite to back his claim, then:
you retort with a greater degree of non-cited generalisation.
Huh?
And of course, his basic logic is sound. You CANNOT say that because most slash writers are women that most women enjoy the depiction of male homosexual activity. You cannot draw any conclusions whatsoever from the initial premise.
Because this is not Great Debates. And as far as I know, there has been no formal studies done on the relative emotional and social soundness of slash writers. As someone who is familiar with the slash scene, my experience is that he is talking bullshit. How would you suggest I go about proving that? I can provide links to archives that prove my claim of the immensity of slash out there, (but I’m not sure if the mods would like that.) I can provide links to various essays and commentary that give evidence for the idea that slash writers are just as sane as women who get off on straight erotica or nothing at all, but I can’t prove it, no.
But no one claimed that “most” women enjoy the depiction of male homosexual activity. The point was that there are a sizable percentage of women that do, and that you cannot simple dismiss this percentage as some sort of bizarre abnormality because it doesn’t fit in with your world view. I didn’t post that here originally because my emphasis was intended to be on his insults. The other argument can continue in GD.
Very interesting, FairyDust. I’ve done a lot of reading on the reasons behind slash, and those essays cover it pretty well. I read an interesting essay the other day (which I can’t find now. Grr.) which presented the thought that male/male erotica is so popular because homosexuality is the last great provider of romantic “angst” and sexual tension in a culture where practically every other divider can easily be overcome or doesn’t exist anymore. (i.e. class issues, racial issues, divorce is easy and widely accepted…) I thought that was interesting, considering the amount of “first time” style stuff in slash. I don’t think there’s any one real reason for everyone. It’s fun to think about though.
And LouisB, I’m sorry you had to briefly think about the icky, icky possibility of two men having sex. I’m sure you’ll recover, though.
I suppose that all depends on your definition of “sizable.” A large percentage of women? No. In the overall scheme of things it is a small subculture, yes. My point in the original thread was that it’s still large enough that it had relevence to the discussion.
I’m not sure why anyone would read slash unless they get off on male homosexuality. That’s the point.
Semantics? He called me and dozens of my friends “nerds” with social and emotional problems because we are turned on by depictions of men making love. I’m not sure where semantics comes in here. Are you telling me I shouldn’t be insulted by this? Would you honestly not mind that being said about you? I’m confused.
As the starter of the linked thread in the OP, I’ll admit I wanted to get UnuMondo’s answer to his declaration that homosexuality somehow damages society.
So far, all he’s done is declare he’s upset that I mispelt his name (of which I stand guilty as charged and apologised) and posted that latest bit of spewing that still doesn’t answer the question at hand.
I think he’s avoid the thread because he knows there is NO answer that’s not based upon his own ignorant bigotry.
It’s worse than you think. Back in the GD gay teens thread he was so determined to derail he made it pretty clear that he believes people he considers to be “nerds” deserve as much suffering as the world can possibly give them. If it drives them to suicide they deserve that, too. Given his desire to see “nerds” and gay teens dead, he’d probably be happy to dance on the graves of you and your slashfan friends.
I vote we shove his head into a toilet and flush a few times.
Yea, I have. Including the ones where he thought that it’s okay for “nerds” to suffer. Just that, his own shit wouldn’t affect him all that much, but someone else’s?
Ok, I don’t hang out in GD so I was unfamilier with Uno anti-homosexual retoric.
I work in science and people call each other nerds all the time - it’s sort of a complement, actually. However, none of the nerd-callers are hoping that their friends and colleagues deserves suffering to the point of suicide. Or at all for that matter.
Oh wow, a pit thread. However, notice some people are agreeing with the gist of what I was trying to say in the thread about slash and the majority of the female population.

Well, I do apologise for this, for I had never heard the word “slash” used to describe general erotica. In university I heard the word used to describe rather fanfiction of such wholesome stories such Harry Potter and Star Trek in which characters are put into male/male situation. I stand by what I say about writers like that. Slash fanfiction is primarily a high school/undergrad thing. Check out any such sight on the Internet and marvel at the level of maturity of the authors and designers.

Wrong. I did not say nerds deserve being picked on, I merely expressed that I understand why they do draw such ire from bullies. I was a nerd in high school, but then I grew up and realised a) getting picked on isn’t so bad when you put it in perspective, and b) high school is no place to be different, and c) I don’t think it’s right to make people accept a certain social group and thus believe it would be wrong to limit non-physical bullying. I also wrote in that thread that I don’t believe bullying causes suicide among nerds and losers, because I don’t believe suicide is caused by external causes, but rather personal mental weakness. If bullying definitely leads to suicide, why do the majority of bullied students not kill themselves?
