Unusual cocktails you like

I did not think it was possible to make Drambuie worse. Ignorance fought.

I’ve got one I may have mentioned in the past. I call it my Cure for the Common Cold:

Slice of frozen fresh ginger (it infuses as it thaws in the glass)
Wedge of lemon (squozzen, rind is key)
2oz Irish Mist (or Drambuie, or B&B, or whiskey & honey to taste)

Combine in a snifter. Drink before bed.

Won’t actually cure your cold but for a while, you won’t care.

When I was in college my roommate and I invented a drink we called a Bloody Larry: beer and V8. I’m disappointed to learn that other people actually drink this, under the name Red Beer or Red Eye. Most people react with disgust when I describe it, but I still drink one occasionally.

Occasionally I order an Amaretto & Coke. It’s not really confusing, but it is really tasty.

One of my sons mixes Dr. Pepper and Licor 43. I don’t think he has a name for it.

Sounds a lot like the Penicillin Cocktail.

I’m guessing some sort of convergent evolution went on with these two drinks!

Add a splash of lime and you have a Moscow Mule.

In the Caribbean I like to order a Ti-Punch at beach bars. It is made with Rhum agricole, muddled lime, and simple syrup. It’s a very potent drink.

Since I’m an old, white tourist, if the bartender doesn’t know me he will ask if I want ice. Thing is, to the locals, ice is how women drink Ti Punch. So, if asked if I want ice, I’ll glare at the bartender and mutter a “What are you fucking saying, mon?” The bartender will quietly apologize and make me a proper Ti-Punch.

Vodka, Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur and Wild Cherry Pepsi -Chocolate Covered Cherry
If the Godiva isn’t handy, chocolate vodka will do in a pinch.

I like Tequila, but usually only drink it straight as shots. I know there are high end tequilas that can be sipped, but they’re usually too expensive for me.

I actually prefer Cosmopolitans. I like vodka and cranberry, sue me.

They also sell the same thing under the label Cruzcampo Radler. It’s basically a regional name for the same thing.

Shandies and Radlers are available pre-mixed by dozens of brewers around the world. Leinenkugel probably been the best known version in the US.

I first met Shandies in Dublin back when every bar had a collection of Fanta-esque flavored soft drinks in all colors of the rainbow available for mixing with your Harp.

Hee hee hee. Drop over for breakfast sometime.

That is fucking delicious, especially on a hot humid summer day. It goes down colder than a plain beer.

My brother in law from St. Louis started me on those, first with 4 oz of tomato juice in a tall glass filled with Pilsener. V-8 is even better. But the best is spicy Clamato, which is the way they do it in Canada.

Everyone thinks it sounds disgusting, until they try one.

When I was in Barcelona last year, and wanting a cold, light, pre-dinner drink, I was surprised to be served sangria premixed in a bottle. It wasn’t bad, though.

I could swear I’ve been drinking the one with Irish Mist or Drambuie before I ever heard of Penicillin. I can even recall the circumstances under which it occurred to me. But it’s entirely possible I’ve substituted my own reality for something I saw/drank elsewhere.

So I know this is a zombie, but I couldn’t see starting a new thread over my revelatory experience. And in case someone is looking to experiment with new flavors…

The other night I enjoyed the finest cocktail I’ve ever had. Just a perfect blend of zesty, sweet, sparkly, a little bitter. I restrained my intake to one only, but I’d have happily sipped these all night.

Tanqueray gin
St. Germain elderberry liqueur
Campari
fresh grapefruit juice
fresh rosemary (just a very little)
cava

They called it a Latin 75, a name that doesn’t do it justice. Served very cold and filled to the brim in a regular white wine glass.

Can’t wait for an excuse to go have another!

Hmm, weirdest concoctions that I like to drink…

a) You know that thing where you submerge some hot peppers in vinegar, to shake onto your turnip greens or whatever? Well, I like to mix some of that with Jack Daniels and stir in some horseradish.

b) Brandy and Frangelico — two parts brandy to one part Frangelico, no rocks.

c) Instead of a conventional Irish coffee, please bring me a deep mug of black coffee with a shot of Kahlua, a shot of Bailey’s, and a half shot of creme de cacao.

d) Not weird so much as I’m unaware of any name for it to order it by, but 2 oz of dark rum like Myers over ice then fill to the rim with coconut water. Edited to add: mescal and coconut water is ALSO nice!

e) Off the beaten track but they do have names: Jamaican screwdriver (rum and orange juice), kali motxo (red wine and Coca-cola).

I drink the bar’s house red wine in a lowball glass. Wine is a manly drink, three times stronger than that wheat juice all the other schmucks are drinking. Not only does a wine glass look silly, it tips over easily and does nothing to bring out the flavor of whatever box wine they’re serving.

I’m pretty tolerant of whatever brand they’re calling house wine, but I wish it wasn’t so expensive though. 500% markup for essentially what you can get in a gas station here in Wisconsin is brutal.

Called katemba in Southern Africa.

I started really drinking in 1994, for some reason, when I bought my first bar manual (though I’d been buying liquor since 21, when I first could).

Kamikazes, Gin Salty Dogs, and Alexander Cocktails were among the first I had to try. It actually funny you should bring it up, because I had a Mint Julep just last night (I’m serious). I also have long enjoyed a Jim Beam and cola.

Also, I don’t know if this is the right place. But I have also made up my own cocktails, over the years. A Shirley Temple Black (just add Gin), a Red Rum (Rum, milk, and Strawberry syrup, shaken with ice) and I very interesting one I dreamt about, believe it or not.

I dreamt it was 1994 again, and I had this gourmet cream (i.e., vanilla) soda that you were supposed to mix with bourbon. I tried it when I woke up, and you know it is surprisingly good. Just make sure it is gourmet vanilla soda, as I said.
