Update: Mr. Shoe is getting better!

Oh, HURRAY!!! I’m so happy to hear some more good news. One of the things I have learned is that stubborn is really important when it comes to healing from catastrophic injuries.

Back when Bill was recovering from his surgery, he didn’t really climb the stairs because he wanted sex on the landing. I lied to everyone about that. Bill did it because he too bull headed to let anyone tell him that he couldn’t have sex on the 3rd floor landing.

Hurray for money coming in. Hurray also for TOS feeling useful again. That must have sucked for him, he sounds like the sort of guy who wants/needs to be a provider.

I do wonder if there is anyway for you to get a bed that will make it easier for him to get up from the same place that supplied the wheelchair. I know that you have a LOT on your plate now, and you don’t want to beg for charity, but I’m pretty sure that there are a lot of people in your area who would love to help. It does take a lot of frustrating calls to finally find the right place, be persistent and polite.

runs around tossing glitter around and singing happy songs

Sorry about the happy songs, you all didn’t deserve to suffer through that.

Happy to hear progress! I’m also excited about the welding. It gives him a purpose…a reason to do things. I like it.

Keep the good news coming. Please.

I know welding was good rehab for me (albeit for my shoulder) even when the exercises at the physical therapist’s didn’t seem to help so much. With TOS doing PT and welding I bet you will see even more improvement quickly.

And I know its a bit late, but I know left foot driving can easily be done. My brother took to it very easily. And the freedom that came with that mobility gave him a real boost.

My grandma moved to an old folks’ home a week ago; any walkers, sticks, crutches or wheelchairs are labeled with the owner’s name and, if possible, picture. Made me wonder how many fights does that avoid, given that a common problem with senile folk is “his bread slice is better than my bread slice!”

I’m glad to hear schmoopie is doing better, both for him and for you. I got to do some itty-bitty welding for electronics lab, it was fun

My uncle tried to carve a channel into a road with his right knee some 50 years ago; the road won, leaving him with a lovely perma-stiff right leg. His cars are adapted only inasmuch as he’s had automatics ever since, he drives left-legged.

Yay for improvement! Hope it continues apace.

Great news! Thanks for the update.

Thank you kindly, everyone, for the replies. He was getting really down over the weekend, and I told him what a few of you had said here. It seemed to help…

As a person who has broken my left leg 3 times I can only say this about recovery: the act of getting better seems incredibly slow, the feeling you are incapable or handicapped hurts, but as the days tick by and you push yourself more and more, normal starts to return.

Normal is really quiet. He doesn’t burst into the room and scream “Hey let’s party!” He slides in while you are busy doing small talk with those neighbors from down the street, you know, the ones who leave their trash cans out too long and you suspect don’t pick up the dog crap but you haven’t caught them at it?

No, Normal is the guy you finally spot standing over near the Lipton Onion Dip, dilligently working on the bag of potato chips and being classy enough not to double dip. You look up with surprise and exclaim “Hey, when did you get here?”

“Oh I’ve been here awhile. Didn’t want to make a fuss. Do you have any diet Coke? I’m on a diet.”

Then you chat awhile and realize that yes indeed Normal has been around, you just didn’t spot him.

Normal takes his time coming to visit, but he is on his way. Until then keep working on that party.

That post made me all kinds of verklempt. Thank you, though, as you’re absolutely right.

(On a side note: a quick shout-out to the makers of ZzzQuil, which seems to be the main catalyst to breaking his insomnia cycles.)

Our BigSmartCat took to his wheelchair immediately and acts as if we brought it home especially for him; Shoe has to literally fight him for it sometimes to get it back. (“Dude, get OFF, I gotta go take a shit!” “So? Go use the litterbox like I do…”)
SmallDumbCat absolutely freaked out when he was rolling around (“Ehrmagawd a robot, run away! Run away”) but loves to cuddle with him when he’s on the couch.

Last weekend, though, she hopped into his chair like it was no big thang and she’d been cool with it all along. Pissed off our BigSmartCat to no end, let me tell you! Now She can roll around with her in his lap and she doesn’t freak out over ScaryRobotMan and simply enjoys the attention and the free ride.

Hmmm… BigSmartCat and SmallDumbCat are now fighting over who gets to ride in the big rolly thing with Daddy. That just has to be an upper!

What he said.

Happy dance! I’ve been stalking the recovery process and you both have my best wishes for continued success.

Some of you have asked here and there about Shoe, so since his birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks ( !!) and then soon after will be the 1st anniversary of The Mosquito Bite ( !!) I figured I’d post a bit more info.

I’d mentioned that he had taken up welding for a while. That was nice while it lasted, but it was only a temporary gig for a project that needed an extra pair of hands until completion. (Plus, he was borrowing the welder and doesn’t have his own. Yet.) However, he found out that there’s a rowing (crew) class that does ongoing training at the nearby lake. So he’s signed up for that. Ten classes on the land-based stationary machine (the rowing version of a stationary bike) and then a float test, and then … he can start rowing on the lake!

He’s not worried about the float test, since he was already working in a therapy pool even before he was discharged in January from inpatient PT, so that should be a piece of cake. The rowing in general is doing exactly what he was hoping it would do: work different muscles, and especially strengthen his core torso muscles & his shoulders. Plus, it’s fresh air and sunshine, a new group of people - all of whom seem welcoming and friendly - and if nothing else it gets him out of the damn house a bit more while I’m at work.

So, rowing for an hour 2x weekly, and outpatient physical therapy for an hour 2x weekly. They’re wearing him out! But in a good way, and tired and sore as he gets, he knows that. Still sore and tired, though …

I’ve been helping him at home, too, mostly stretching his legs and back for him when he’s lying on his back on the couch. One leg (the “bad” one a.k.a Righty) is still so stiff that he can’t straighten it all the way, and it clearly hurts to try. But try he does, pressing down on the knee or asking me to help add my weight.

Otherwise … lessee, what else? He’s helping his dad out with some CAD drafting - his dad is “retired” and is working as a consultant on some projects, and can use his son’s assistance with the newfangled computermachine thingamabob all you young’uns use these days. We’ve completely switched on one Traditional Household Gender Role: he deals with the laundry, I mow the lawn. He even handles some of the grocery shopping now, stopping in to the nearby big-box grocery store near his PT when his mom gives him a lift. We rolled one of the grills* up onto the deck, so he’s often in charge of dinner as well. He still has good days and bad days – the constant reminders of what he’s lost, what he can’t do, etc. are grating – but I think the proportions are starting to slowly shift towards more good days than bad days, and fewer bad days overall.
I can’t think of anything else right now, but I wanted to let you know that I’ve seen your “how’s Shoe?” notes and figured I’d respond all at once.

  • Yes, that’s right. “One of the grills.” The dude has an entire herd of them strewn about the backyard. I was a bit nervous at first since the deck is wooden, but it’s a gas grill and nothing hot ever goes downward, so it’s been working out well.

Thanks for the update. Please let him know he still has a bunch of fans on here and he needs to keep on gaining strength and making us all proud. As we are.

very glad to hear this!!

I’ve followed your story since the beginning (has it really been a year?!) and I’m so glad he is doing well. And that you are doing well, too.

Glad to hear things have really fallen into something of a workable routine. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’m recovering from a broken little toe right now. For three weeks, I was limping slowly everywhere I wanted to go - and it drove me crazy! I don’t know how people with long term problems like his do it, but I have so much respect for them.
But be careful with that herd of grills! Make sure they are properly neutered, or you’ll end up with a bunch of babies!

I have finally found this thread. I looked for a bit back in winter but then life grabbed my calendar and I’ve been struggling with my schedule ever since.

I am so GLAD to hear all this good news Purple. I want to drive down to Texas and give you and Shoe each a great big hug. Fantastic news!

Yaaaaaa!
This progress report is the best news I have heard all day.
So when is his first 10K?
