Chert was commonly by prehistoric peoples for their toolmaking (projectile points, knives, etc.). It fractures conchoidally, making it ideal for percussion flaking, hence the widespread usage. The darker variety is what we know as flint.
(Sorry–you pick up a lot of geology when getting a degree in archaeology.)

Could this be one of those space-wasting threads everyone’s been going on about? I mean, it makes no sense and a lot of people are going to waste a lot of time opening it up looking for some issue (or fightin’ words) between scratch1300 and Upham, and all they’re going to find is this.

Well, saying spodumene wouldn’t be all that hard on Upham, as it’s only about a 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, IIRC.
I’m seeing a pattern here… they both have high silicate content… ???

Not to burst your bubble, but spodumene is technically a mineral. It combines with other pedogenic minerals to form a rock.
But it’s a pretty mineral, kinda lilac-ish…
