Upset Puppy Tummy...

We recently were blessed with a cuter than cute black pug puppy named Fiji.

Obligatory Puppy Pic

She is sweet as honey and a really good pup, the only problem we have been having with her is she pukes. Constantly. Compulsively. Prolifically.

Not to give a graphic detailed description of puke, but is it mostly watery, and seems to happen when she is overly excited or right after she drinks water. Or she might cough a little then up it will come. Almost like she can’t supress her gag reflex or something.

She seems healthy in every other way…runs and plays just like a puppy should, eats heartily, healthy BM’s, shiny coat, bright eyes, no runny nose, etc. Have taken her to the vet who said it may be a “phase” or it may be something congenital. Meaning we may just have to get used to it, or we could take the puppy back to the breeder and get a refund! I can’t imagine parting with her at this point.

We are taking her back to the vet later next week as they did do some lab tests but the problem seems to be getting worse, not better.

Anyone else ever experience anything like this with a puppy?

:smack: Oops, meant to post this in IMHO…Mods pls relocate…! Thanks~

Um. Pic no work. Need fix NOW!

Every puppy I’ve ever had has barfed a few times from eating/drinking too quickly. (They haven’t yet realized that they no longer have to compete with their siblings to get to the bowl.) You can try to slow down her eating and drinking by putting the food and water in shallow pans. I used to use a cookie sheet for the food and only put a little water at a time in the bowl (just enough to cover the bottom.)

As long as she doesn’t have worms or a bacterial infection in the tummy (which your vet should have already checked) it may just be the excitement of having a new home. How do you react when she pukes? If you’re correcting her for it, it might make her even more nervous and add to the problem.

Hope the poor pup feels better soon.

Bumping–I want to see the puppy!

Our Clover also vomited up a time or two after eating–eating/drinking too quickly, or maybe eating something inedible (rocks, sticks, leaves, lint, paper…) I would think that if it is happening more than once or twice, and you don’t see puppy kibble in the urp, a vet should be consulted.

Just thought of something-- what are you feeding her? Is there a possibility that she’s allergic to something in her food?

Has the vet checked her liver? My dog started vomiting a yellow, foamy substance. It turned out that she was having liver problems, but the good thing is that the liver is one of the few bodily organs that will repair itself if the damaging agent is eliminated.

How old is she and how long has this been going on? Can she keep food down?

Sorry, the link should work now, I changed the privacy settings!

That’s a good idea about spreading her food out maybe that will slow her down a little. The weird thing is she rarely pukes up food…it’s mostly just watery…no bits or chunks of food (sorry for graphic content of that sentence!)

And you’re right about the way we react…we try not to correct her specifically but she may be taking our “Aw man not again!” as directed at her. As Cesar Milan would say, she’s picking up on our negative energy.

No apology necessay. The contents of the puke can be a clue as to what’s going on.

How long have you had her?

That’s one cute puppy, by the way!

How many times do you feed her per day? My dog used to vomit up liquid if he went too long without eating. The vet had us spread his meal into five small servings instead of the original three that we were doing. That took care of the problem.
