Urban legend worries Maryland authorities

Don’t fall for the $100 bill scam, even if it isn’t real!

I’m not sure of the point of warning people about a scam when you have no confirmed cases of it ever happening. But we gotta be vigilant. :dubious:

Yep, the time to take precautions is after you’ve been carjacked.

*always check under your car when approaching it in a shopping center parking lot, cause there might be miscreants hiding under it, ready to slash at your ankles and then rob you.

Don’t go letting facts get in the way of a good story.

I’m surprised they don’t warn about the Home Depot Scam:

I don’t know about most people, but I’d notice the $100 bill before I got in my car.

Depends how it was parked, but I’m sure I’d see it before even putting the keys in the ignition.

Seems like putting a $100 bill on a random car and then hanging out in the immediate vicinity potentially for hours straight waiting for its owner to show up is a rather inefficient way of stealing a car.

Not to mention random passers-by grabbing the $100…

You have to do it to every car in the parking lot. Duh.

It’s a damn shame there’s no such scam!

He left out the last line of the warning

Joke’s on them. My car’s only worth $98.00

And you can drive a pretty fair distance with a piece of paper stuck under your windshield wiper.

Hey, I just thought, why a $100 bill? A $5 bill would serve the same purpose, wouldn’t it? Or even a $1 bill?

“Hey, free money tucked under my windshield wiper! I think I’ll start my car and go out and get it!”

No no no, they wait until you reach down to grab at your ankle and then they cut your finger off so they can take it back in to the gang leaders and prove they did it. Duh!
(I still remember this story going around when I was in high school – supposedly it was at one of our local malls)

And the 2nd last line:

I’m not likely going to become a parking lot victim. I carry a gun. You should too.

But what if they steal your gun too while you’re bent over your car hood struggling with the stuck hundred dollar bill? This story just got scarier!
