URGENT - Dogs & Toad Toxins??????

We need help quickly. Maddie, our 18 month old French Bulldog has apparently gotten ahold of an unknown type of Toad from the cotton field. She has gotten ahold of them before, with basically just an upset tummy for about 24-30 hours.

However, this time she is cool to the touch, shaking like she is cold, lethargic, but alert. Bob is holding her on his chest and she is covered. She is still shaking, but her legs now feel a little warmer. She is now fitfully sleeping.

One of our main concerns is that she has a grade 4 out of 6 heart murmur. We know that the toxins are neurological in nature.

JUST TALKED TO THE VET - we might be dealing with a snakebite.

VBob here; my wife posted the original.

No sign of a snakebite. Copperheads are a concern 'round here. Per vet instructions, we’re keepin her warm and quiet, and watching for any changes. Maddy is in my lap now as I type.

I’m sure that your vet can answer your questions far better than we can here. In any case, I’m not exactly sure what information you need.

The most dangerous toad in the US is the Marine Toad, or Giant Toad, found in south Texas and parts of Florida, which I believe can kill a dog. As far as I know, poisoning by most other toads is not normally fatal. If a dog has attacked a toad, it will usually be drooling and maybe vomiting.

I hope she’s ok. Keep us posted.

VWife’s post kind of sidestepped the question of home remedies, which is what I was after.

The toads in NC are nothing special, but all are toxic enough that a 30 lb dog is going to feel crappy for a day or so, and the one VWife saw the dog go after was bigger than a golfball.

She drooled a bit this afternoon, and is resting comfortably now. She’s also warmed up. We’re doing as instructed by the vet, BTW.

SCL, let me know where to e-mail your mushy…

Wow. Scary. Sending warm thoughts her way. Let us know how it goes.

Good vibes for Maddie’s speedy recovery.

For everyone concerned, this morning she was feeling a bit better, but acting like she was hung over.

“I’m a French Bulldog named Maddy, and I’m addicted to toads. It’s been a day since I ate my last one…”

“e-mail your mushy…”

I am afraid. I am very afraid.

Glad Maddy’s doing better.

I am now going to hide from e-mail…

For you parents, toad licking is also known as “lily padding” "Frenching the prince, " and “doing Kermit.”
:>

It’s not too often you find an ad quite like this (unless it’s an ebay ad) …

:smack: Anybody looking to acquire some dog arthritis? (I wonder how they sell - or convey - it?) :dubious:

Oh, yeah, and, VunderBob, how’s Maddie doing now? Is she all better yet? Has the vet looked her over? You know there are a lot of us Dopers who are nuts for dogs and/or cats, ours or most anybody’s.

I know that cats go in for toad licking in the UK

  • I did not realize that dogs were also junkies

The little shit was feeling well enough yesterday to pick 8 playfights with the other dog…

And she tried to eat another toad last night.

No seriously, it’s time for an intervention.

“Maddy, we love you. This is Spot from Toadaholics Anonymous. Spot wants to help you.”

The Dog Who Loved to Suck on Toads

That’ll teach me for bitching about our dogs’ habits of comping grass like goats in the front yard.
