urls and links and...

If I type a url here such as gardenweb.com it become a link upon submit.

How do I make it just text? Not clickable?

Uncheck “Automatically parse links in text” under Miscellaneous Options before submitting your post or reply.

Note that we use an advertising click counter service here called Viglink (which I have nothing good to say about), and if you haven’t opted out of Viglink or don’t have it blocked it may on occasion make something clickable even if it’s not a clickable link as far as the SDMB is concerned. So if you made sure that the link wasn’t clickable when you posted and it still shows up as clickable on your computer afterwards, that could be a reason why.

ETA: FYI, gardenweb.com isn’t clickable in your post.

You can also use the tags.

I click it in my OP or in your response and it works for me. That is to say that clicking gardenweb.com here takes me to houzz which owns gadenweb.

Don’t forget about Viglink. It automatically turns URLs into links on its own, separate from the board software. You have to use adblock or the official opt-out page for that not to happen.

It’s right there in post #2.

Before you click, is it underlined?

Is this underlined: gardenweb.com ?

It’s underlined for me in your post and every other post. And works if I click on it.

Then the underlining and the link being made is something in your computer, not in the post. Check my source code and you’ll see I used the noparse tags for one line.

I have run across malware-type programs that inserted underlining all over the place where the web page designer did not put them. If this is happening to you, I think you have something intercepting the web pages and editing them. Probably not what you want.

It’s working for me, too, and I’m running a Mac. The OP’s post #1 also had a clickable link, but then there was nothing tagged with a noparse tag.

Straightdope.com

Are you sure that the tag actually is set to work on the Board?

It works for me. Perhaps Viglink is the culprit here, and is acting like some malware routines I have seen.

Not clickable for me. I’m leaning towards Viglink.

And not for me. (I have Vigilink disabled.)

I’m viewing this in Chrome with no adblock and with Viglink turned on. The url is not clickable for me anywhere in this thread. It’s not Viglink that’s causing the problem, at least it doesn’t seem to be in this thread. janeslogin and Exapno Mapcase may want to scan their machines for malware.

All the links in this thread are clickable on my Mac with Chrome / Safari. How does one disable viglink?

Safari on my iPad. All links are clickable.

Maybe an Apple thing?

I’ve been using Firefox on a Mac, so Apple is the only common denominator.

And, yep. On a PC none of the links are live.
