US Dept. Store Bankruptcies

I’m trying to remember the name of the large US upscale dept store chain that went bankrupt in th 80’s. I think that there was a connection to a Canadian millionaire that had bought the chain a couple of months/years previously.

I pretty sure that the chain wasn’t Bloomingdale’s or Macy’s, and also think that it might have started with an “s”. Also, it wasn’t one of the lower tier (no offense inteded) chains like Woolworth, Bradlees, K-Mart,…etc.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Any help is most appreciated.

Thanks…MR.

A lot of department store chains have declared bankruptcy over the years.

Federated in 1990. Macy’s in 1992. But that didn’t stop Federated from buying Macy’s in 1994!

Check the timeline here. Work up from the bottom.

Canada? Starts with “s”?.. You don’t mean Simpson’s, do you?

IIRC it vanished sometime in the mid-80s.

Probably the Canadian you’re referring to is Robert Campeau.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. The Canadian I was referring to was Robert Campeau, and it was Federated Stores. I guess it was Bloomingdales that I was looking for, just couldn’t remember if it was them or someone else that had gone through bankruptcy.

Thanks again…MR.

Jordan Marsh Company went bankrupt and was also purchased by Robert Campeau. However, Jordan Marsh didn’t have a very large “chain” of stores.
