Charlie Angus, an NDP MP just compared Trump to “Al Capone during his syphilitic period” on CNN.
I just spotted an interesting statistic - "The U.S. relies on imports for over 95% of its potash fertilizer needs, with nearly 90% of that coming from Canada, according to data from the USDA.
A disruption to the U.S.-Canadian trade relationship like the imposed tariffs will have “significant ripple effects” not just for farmers but for the broader food supply chain and ultimately the prices consumers pay at the grocery store, according to The Fertilizer Institute, the nation’s leading voice of the fertilizer industry with roots dating back to 1883." So there’s an ace that Canada is sitting on…

Doug Ford is having all American alcohol pulled from store shelves, cancelling Ontario’s contract with Starlink, and barring American companies from bidding on provincial contracts.
A relevant statistic: the LCBO (Ontario liquor board) is the largest single purchaser of alcohol in the world. Plus, BC and Quebec (at least) are doing the same thing.
New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as well.
This is literally true but sort of implies a degree of influence LCBO might have that it does not. It’s the world’s largest purchaser only because no other jurisdiction of similar size has such a weird system for selling booze. It probably constitutes maybe two percent, at best, of a major American liquor company’s total sales.
Tariffs pushed back a month, for some reason, on both Mexico and Canada. So just another 30 days of wondering WTF is happening in Washington.
Apparently Justin Trudeau agreed to appoint a “fentanyl czar” and declare major Mexican drug cartels to be terrorist organizations, both purely symbolic moves that cost Canada nothing except the salary of this “czar” who will probably spend most of their days trying to find something to do. He also promised more border patrols, which we were already doing anyway and which is fine for us in terms of stopping the flow of guns from the USA.
The Canadian Quislings who wanted us to give away everything look stupid for now. Granted, Trump still has malice in mind.
For the former, I read somewhere that President Sheinbaum agreed to send 10,000 troops to the U.S. border to help with drug enforcement & interdiction.
Which Mexico had started doing in 2021, to help Joe Biden, without needing a huge tariff spat.
From what I’ve read Mexico already has 15,000 soldiers on the border, so a promise of 10,000 is actually a drawdown.
It’s a good thing Trump is a delirium-ravaged idiot who can’t tell when he’s being played as long as the person doing so flatters his ego.
I will still be avoiding American made and encouraging elected officials at every level to do what they can to find new markets and diversify regardless of the outcome. This was a warning shot and I hope we take heed.
This is the ultimate rosy scenario.
Here’s my less rosy guess. The U.S. was not ready to collect the tariffs tomorrow, but in 30 days, we will be.
I will go on record as saying, if Trump causes an actual, physical conflict with Canada, I will renounce my USA citizenship, and fight on the side of what is right.
Same for my Mexican brothers and sisters.
Keep that booze off the shelves. Hit back where it hurts; in the wallet. It’s the only way these slack-jawed morons will realize what a fucking moron they voted for…
It is a horrible unpatriotic thing for me to say, but snowbirds going home will have a bigger impact. If you must get away from the cold by going to Florida, go to Key West.
Huge. Of the fentanyl coming into the U.S. about one quarter of one percent comes in from Canada!
(Most of the rest comes through legal entry points on our southern border.)
Yea, Orange Man doesn’t even realize he got played, here.
Honestly, I’d say it’s 50/50 that Trump is even still president 30 days from now.
