US Midterm Election watch along thread

Who in Wisconsin votes for Evers and Johnson?. I do wonder if Barnes was a bit too left and got some non votes. Would Lasry have done better in the general? Possibly would have got more swing votes, but also would not have energized the base.

And ug, van Orden – he attended the Jan 6 rally (though I believe he did not enter the capitol)

I know, right? Moderates who have racist tendencies and/or are easily swayed by television ads.

Though, young voters turning out in high numbers doesn’t always mean more Democratic votes…BUT it might this year, thanks to the anti-choice Supreme Court decision over the summer, Here’s a tweet from historian Lara Putnam:

“The change in voter reg trends since Dobbs is particularly stark among young voters. I’ll note again just how well the GOP did among young PA voters by this metric leading up to 2020: something I don’t think showed up in polling at the time, but in fact presaged a great GOP year.”

Maryland and Missouri voted to allow recreational use of cannabis.

:grinning:

I’m so disappointed about Texas. I’m feeling so trapped. Even if the whole rest of the country were deep blue, Abbott et al would keep us in the Middle Ages forever, and with SCOTUS the way it is, it’s even easier.

Speaking of backlash against the Dobbs decision, here’s FiveThirtyEight on Michigan (where a pro-choice referendum was on the ballot):

" Overnight, Democrats won control of both the Michigan state Senate and Michigan state House. It is the first time Democrats have won the state Senate since 1984. Since Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also won reelection, Democrats will now have full control of Michigan state government."

His old House seat is now held by a youngish (53) Democratic incumbent. The odds of him being able to reclaim it anytime soon are low.

I kind of hate rural Texas at this point.

I’m tired of suffering the consequences of the votes from people who live in the middle of nowhere.

I skipped over a bunch, but there is great joy in Michigan today. I’m a teacher, but also just an educated person and ALL the proposals passed and our Democratic governor was re-elected. Her opponent was an election denier who claims Trump won Michigan in 2020.

Abortion rights were added to the Michigan constitution by a solid, but lower than one would hope, majority.

Early(9 days) of in person voting was also added to all future elections.

Let’s be honest. Dems win when people vote. Trump barely won Michigan in 2016 because of people assuming H. Clinton could not lose. She COULD and did. Embarrassing for our state. Biden won in 2020, but it was damn close compared to what it should be. Not super close, but too close.

OH MY GOD I JUST READ THIS!!!

I AM SO HAPPY!

I can’t believe I am thinking this, but Michigan is showing itself to be a far superior state to Ohio.

As far as largish states are concerned, it is hard to see FL and TX moving blueward anytime soon. Come on up to IL - or MI!

Speaking of MI, I’m going to try to dig up that thread where someone complained of Trusts taking over their county in SW MI. Wondering how last night affected them. I had the fortune of spending time with a group of VERY cool VERY blue folk in that area recently, so I’m hoping ALL is not doom and gloom for that area.

It is amazing that two adjoining Midwestern states can be so different-- Michigan solid blue and Ohio starkly red. Proud to be a Michigander this morning.

Thanks to all who’ve contributed to this thread so far-- as in the 2020 election, this ‘watch along’ election thread was a welcome contrast to the repetitive bloviating on the networks.

Yes, same old thing in Ohio. In the end Vance won by a larger margin than most were predicting as well. Very disheartening.

very happy about michigan. sad about ohio.

house is very close 178 D 199 R. senate 48-48.

who has the sdmb magic 8 ball?

Local issue that may be of general interest: Seattle voters had an opportunity to implement Ranked Choice Voting in city elections. As of right now, it’s running behind, with No ahead of Yes by a razor thin margin.

The good news, such as it is, is that there were two alternatives for reforming the vote. One was backed by techbros, and was clearly intended to mainstream the council and marginalize outsider candidates during the primary. The other was a true RCV mechanism. The latter is heavily favored by voters over the former, based on tabulates results. In your face, techbros.

But if the overall vote doesn’t tip in the final returns, RCV won’t be instituted either.

It does look like Republicans came one seat shy of securing a supermajority in the North Carolina House. If Democrats can stick together (always a dicey proposition) then Cooper’s ability to veto should still be secure.

You should be proud of MI. At least your state isn’t populated by a bunch of uneducated cultists incapable of having coherent, intelligent thoughts of their own.

The Hive Mind in Ohio is terrible.

Senate is 48-48 but Alaska will elect a Repup. it’s just a matter of which one. It looks like the Dems take AZ and the GOP flips NV and keeps WI. It’s down to the GA runoff in early December. Warnock is ahead by just shy of 1%. The Libertarian got a little over 2% of the vote. Which way do they break?

In the house the GOP has flipped 9 seats. Dems flipped 3 seats. GOP needs to net 5 flips to take the House which will probably happen.

Oh, we still have PLENTY of those in Michigan. They’re just not a voting majority. The Michigan statehouse had its own mini-version of January 6 in the Spring of 2020.
