US Midterm Election watch along thread

AP says the second race is for school superintendent, the biggest disappointment in this election. Democrats in Arizona won the Senate, Governor’s and Secretary of State’s elections but lost School Sup. to Tom Horne, Sup. for eight years before becoming AG for four.

The main focus of his campaign was to stop CRT being taught in schools but was unable to point to any districts that had implemented it.

" Arizona law plainly states that the supervisors board “has a non-discretionary duty to canvass the returns as provided by the County Recorder or other officer in charge of elections and has no authority (emphasis added) to change vote totals or reject the election results.” And a refusal to comply can even expose members of the board to criminal liability."

I don’t want any leopards to starve or anything, but I’m still in favor of everyone’s votes actually counting. I’m thankful that the nature of message board posting affords me the anonymity to express such outlandish views!

Something something Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Next he’ll campaign against shark attacks in Arizona, and insist everyone wear a magic shark-repelling bracelet. Success!

Yup. First day on the job he can hold a press conference where all he does is dust off his hands and say “See, I told ya!”

Hell, no! It was Vince Foster all along!

How retro!

We’re talkin’ deep state here.

It’s Vince Fosters all the way down?

the house stands at 212d to 220r at this time. rep. mceachin (d) passed away on monday and a special election will happen in his district for his seat.

2 races remain uncalled.

Is it generally considered a safe D district?

McEachin won the last three elections with at least 61% of the vote each time, and the district voted pretty strongly D in recent statewide and presidential elections, so it’d appear so.

That’s encouraging; though he does seem to have had quite a strong personal reputation.

– whoops, just saw your edit. Thanks!

I pulled the data from the Wikipedia entry on the district, in case anyone cares to dig in further:

hakeem jeffries is in as leader, clark and aguilar in as # 2 and 3.

mccarthy is still in trouble trying to get votes for speaker.

Virginia law charges the governor (Republican Glenn Youngkin) with scheduling the special election to fill an empty Congressional seat. Interestingly, the law does not set a timeframe for him to do so — technically he could wait until almost the end of the next term to hold the election, leaving that seat vacant for this Congress.

But wouldn’t that violate long held political norms! :astonished:

It behooves me to point out that Rep. McEachin was re-elected to a different district in the most recent election, due to redistricting. I know because he used to represent my district, in Suffolk, but in the most recent election, I voted for Elaine Luria, unsuccessfully, against Jen Kiggans.

I liked McEachin; his office was very responsive to my communications, and he had a good reputation of fighting for his constituents. We are lesser for his loss.

So is it true at this point the Republicans will rule with a maximum of 222 people? That will prove difficult for them - given the narrow margin, degree of division, desire for factions to exert views and expound influence and disagreements on how aggressively they should pursue partisan crap like investigating ancient democratic elections.
